The Fix - Scozzafava drops out of NY-23 special election
Maybe we are beginning to make some headway in giving people a true choice between conservatives and liberals. Can we find a conservative to run against Boyd?

This race has been billed as a battle for the direction of the Republican party. Looks like the far right won, increasingly reducing the party's message of inclusiveness. A smaller and more radical Republican party is good news for Democrats.

The American Conservative party doesn't appear to be the far right as we think of it - they are federalists. About the only thing I don't like about their platform is support for preemption. They should be isolationists AFACT.
"I have the right to live my life as I see fit. You have the right to disapprove of me. You do not have the right to use the powers of the government to impose your beliefs on me, a sovereign individual. Nor do I have the right to use government power to force you to accept me."

Interesting read, sounds like the astute and grounded Bill Buckley and company. So 30a shopper, you are a smart and intelligent person--this is obvious from your posts--How will you hide or get rid of the Palin Factor or the dumb extremist views that want to get into this same bed?
And don't tell me is is the Dems doing smearing!Edited

The same way the Dems get by the Biden factor. Or by the leftist extremism that some Dems promote. Inclusive means just that, but don't forsake your principles.
I like the party platform as it seems to fit my views much better than the R's and the D's.

I don't see how you can compare Biden with Palin. He's not a force to be reckoned within the party and he's fairly moderate as Dems go. Palin at least has a cult following and is a wing nut.

who in a lucid state of mind can side with preemptive war?

I think Palin represents the religious right. These folks will always be a part of the republican party. It will be interesting to see how large a voice they have in the upcoming elections. Hoffman is clearly a swing away from this and toward the party's conservative base. I think that's a good development. Limited government, controlled spending, and lower taxes are always a good sell to the American people.
edit - especially after a democrat controlled congress and white house rack up 3-4 trillion in debt!

As of this afternoon, Scozzafava has chosen to endorse Bill Owens, the Democratic candidate. This sure will make the NY-23 vote more interesting. Wonder what backlash she will face from the republicans...
In Bill Owens, I see a sense of duty and integrity that will guide him beyond political partisanship. He will be and independent voice devoted to doing what is right for New York," she said. "Bill understands this district and its people, and when he represents us in Congress he will put our interests first.

He has been in the leadership of the party since the 80's. And he has been saying dumb things the whole time.
The point is that every party has it's factions and extremes. But that is not a bad thing. Lord help us if the Dems lose their moderates.
The Republican problem is different. They are not trusted because they abandoned what they campaigned on once elected. Palin seems to really believe what she says which is why she has appeal. People will forgive shallow if the person is real.

She's already been lashed, whipped, and tarred and feathered by her own party for not being Republican enough; for being pro-life, and anything considered liberal. Palin set up camp in upstate NY sending smoke signals...drop out.. drop out. Do as I did. The polls just last week had her in the lead. They set up a massive campaign against Scozzafava. Her own party... and when she was selected by them, no one said as much as boo. Scozzafava won't be the last. Palin and Co. are going after anyone not deemed Conservative enough. if you've never been to this area of New York, believe me, it is not much different from Alaska .

I had heard that this area of the country was about as red as you can get. I haven't followed the race but it seems odd that a very liberal republican was running in this district. Plus the election being ochestrated by the white house.. the whole thing just seems really really weird to me. It sounds like Hoffman is the right man for the job for this area. What lead to this crazy show down over Scozzafava is a mystery to me.
Overall the I find the Corzine / Christie race is far more interesting.

You're right. The whole of upstate NY is blood red. I've been following this race because it is interesting to see where the Republican party is headed. Scozzafava was elected by her party peers, yet thrown out under the bus. She was used as an example. Bottom line-- the party is sending message: If you are not Republican enough, don't come to the party.

Look out, here come the conservatives!
Uncivil War: Conservatives to challenge a dozen GOP candidates - Yahoo! News
In what could be a nightmare scenario for Republican Party officials, conservative activists are gearing up to challenge leading GOP candidates in more than a dozen key House and Senate races in 2010.
Conservatives and tea party activists had already set their sights on some of the GOP’s top Senate recruits — a list that includes Gov. Charlie Crist in Florida, former Rep. Rob Simmons in Connecticut and Rep. Mark Kirk in Illinois, among others.
Activists contend that the only way back to majority status is to embrace the conservative principles that the party jettisoned during the past decades once it became too enamored of power. To them, the issue is less about ideological purity than about the compromises they see the party’s Washington establishment making and what they contend is a lack of support for conservative candidates who are deemed unelectable by GOP solons.
“New York 23, on some scale, is the first battle of a larger internal Republican debate over how to define the party,” said former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio, a conservative who is challenging Crist for the Senate nomination. “They want us to vote for their candidates, but they don’t want us to run for office.”
Rubio’s race is one that many on the right point to as the next New York 23, a contest where conservatives and tea party activists are in open revolt about Crist and the national party’s decision to endorse him despite his embrace — literally — of President Barack Obama and his stimulus package during a Florida visit in February.
Rubio has won nearly a dozen county GOP straw polls across the state and is rapidly becoming a darling of the tea party movement.

I really don't think a public witch hunt of moderate Republican candidates (that both Dems and Repubs vote for) and replacing them w/ candidates so conservative they alienate many Republicans is the way to get enough votes to win..........................
It's less of a winning strategy and more of a "drive voters to the other party" strategy IMO.
And if they bring in Palin to campaign it's like Christmas coming early for Dems!

Exactly! Someone who gets it. Not only that, it's going to turn off potentially good politicians from running in the future who work well across the fence.
