[FONT=Verdana,Sans-serif]WASHINGTON (AP) - Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, architect of an unpopular war in Iraq, intends to resign after six stormy years at the Pentagon, Republican officials said Wednesday.
Word came a day after the Democratic gains in the election, in which Rumsfeld was a focus of much of the criticism of the Iraq war. Officials said Robert Gates, former head of the CIA, would replace Rumsfeld.
Earlier today, a spokesman for Rumsfeld said he'd given no indication that he would step down in the wake of Democratic election gains. The spokesman said Rumsfeld would work with Congress on Iraq but added that the focus on stabilizing the country will remain the same.
In the days leading up to the election, President Bush said he wanted Rumsfeld to stay on as defense chief until the end of Bush's second term.

 Wow, that didn't take long.

The Republicans are basically pulling themselves up off the Election Day mat.
It was only two days ago that Prez Bush said no way was Rumsfeld leaving.

Five term Kentucky Congresswoman Anne Northup (R), in an act of pre-election desperation after seeing her poll numbers go down the toilet, had said that Rumsfeld should resign. Now, neither one of them have their old job. What a shame. I am very proud of Louisvillians today for changing things up a bit.

I gave up several years ago, but I do have hope for the near future... this resignation was a step in the right direction, IMO.

I thought President Bush was very gracious in defeat. I have not been a fan of his but today he was all class. I am very optimistic that in the next two years some important things can be accomplished in immigration, Iraq policy, and minimum wage. Tax issues, healthcare and reforming and making solvent social security and medicare unfortunately, will have to wait until after the 2008 elections.

What went down yesterday and today was pretty major! I have been too busy getting ready for end-of-semester projects and shopping (a girl's gotta do what a girl's supposed to do) to totally get a grip on what has happened. I need to catch up on my news and reading to make any intelligent comments. But I'm shocked.

Now if Dubya, Dicky and Condi will just follow suit, we'll be getting somewhere.

Oh, goofer, I hope you're right. There's so much our country needs to accomplish. It makes me sad to see what a muddle we're in. I hope we get on the good path again.

I like your 'tude. we all should be so hopeful. I'll try to be more hopeful. But, at this point, it's kinda hard.

I have a question, it is the same one I heard on the radio yesterday. So many people voice their opinion about how the "powers that be" are doing everything wrong. So if you could change these things what would you do???:idontno: I am not trying to start a "war" here, just some conversation to see how everyone would like to see things played out. ~~~ I may not get one response....that is ok also...

1. immigration
2. Iraq
3. minimum wage
4. Tax issues
5. healthcare
6. social security

Thank you:biggrin: My voted actually counted this year. It was a dirty campaign season here, mud was flying everywhere. I'm glad it's over.

On this morning's news, Bush was moaning about not having more changes earlier (speaking on the Rumsfeld/war issue). :floor:

heh
Maybe it's not so much what to do, but what not to do, such as invading Iraq.
I am registered Independent; neither Dem nor Republican party fills me with fawning admiration, they both basically serve the same master: big business.
However, when I ask myself is the USA better off since Dubya's presidency I know darn well what the answer is.
Having a bunch of Dems fumbling around trying to develop a plan might be better than the military-industrial complex we have now.

well I was not actually asking the Dems but the people on this board. (who I am ASSUMING are Dems by the comments they make)They are happy with the results and believe that all these changes are going to happen...and quickly. I just wanted to know what the posters on this board would do about certain problems if they were in control... take for instance, immigration. THat seems to be the big topic. What would they do??? Just trying to stimulate conversation...

I can't claim to be on either side of that fence.

Since the election, I have already seen a quick change in Bush's behavior and politricks, so this election did shake things up a bit.

What would I do about certain problems? :funn: I would say something like Ronald Reagan, "Mr Dune Destroyer, tear down these walls." Also, I would have a plan to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and clothe the naked.
