[FONT=Verdana,Sans-serif]WASHINGTON (AP) - Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, architect of an unpopular war in Iraq, intends to resign after six stormy years at the Pentagon, Republican officials said Wednesday.
Word came a day after the Democratic gains in the election, in which Rumsfeld was a focus of much of the criticism of the Iraq war. Officials said Robert Gates, former head of the CIA, would replace Rumsfeld.
Earlier today, a spokesman for Rumsfeld said he'd given no indication that he would step down in the wake of Democratic election gains. The spokesman said Rumsfeld would work with Congress on Iraq but added that the focus on stabilizing the country will remain the same.
In the days leading up to the election, President Bush said he wanted Rumsfeld to stay on as defense chief until the end of Bush's second term.

 Wow, that didn't take long.

There may be exceptions, but I preach to the norm.

No, even the Americans should not get everything for on a free ride, but everyone has moments when they are down and out and in need of a helping hand to remind them that the world isn't always cruel and tough. It seems that many people in today's world want the lazy way out, and often they work harder at trying to get the free ride than they would have if they took an honest job where they could play on the internet all day. :D -( just a little fun, but not far from the truth.)

well I was not actually asking the Dems but the people on this board. (who I am ASSUMING are Dems by the comments they make)They are happy with the results and believe that all these changes are going to happen...and quickly. I just wanted to know what the posters on this board would do about certain problems if they were in control... take for instance, immigration. THat seems to be the big topic. What would they do??? Just trying to stimulate conversation...

a good majority of americans are unsatisified with the state of things with this administration, and they are not all Dems.

in my opinion, the road to progress will be long and difficult after the last several years of good old boy, screw the rest of the world, we're moral cause we're Christian (my ass), total incompetence. I do not know how to answer your questions, but I do have high hopes for smart leaders to come forth (dems and Reps) who are ready for intellectual politics and real progress in the nation and in the world. pleeeeze... may the hardcore religious party just fade away into neverending obscurity...

I have a question, it is the same one I heard on the radio yesterday. So many people voice their opinion about how the "powers that be" are doing everything wrong. So if you could change these things what would you do???:idontno: I am not trying to start a "war" here, just some conversation to see how everyone would like to see things played out. ~~~ I may not get one response....that is ok also...

1. immigration
2. Iraq
3. minimum wage
4. Tax issues
5. healthcare
6. social security

Inlet: you forgot he most important issue. Education of our children. vouchers? teaching a test? how about expecting meaningful educational outcomes? and expecting highly qualified educators, and paying them as professionals?

I'm a little late on this thread but haven't issues # 3-6 been the retoric in all elections the past 20 years, including education and medicare.

Then # 1 Immigration came upon us overnight as a deversion to # 2 the Iraq war. Which if I remember correctly someone on a ship after the Shock and Awe bombing saying "Mission Accompished". As Homer Simpson would say "DOH".

Great chart Cil, who's pockets are getting filled with all that money we are dishing out?

Tootsie, you nailed that that Christian thing, ouch.

Solutions to all of above, naw, need some issues for the 2008 election.

The Iraq one is the only REAL issue for this country, but where do we go from here? Not going to be an easy or pretty ending no matter how you approach it...

Yes. At this point, Iraq is probably going to be a bloody mess with or without us.
Thousands upon thousands of Iraqis are dead; the majority want us out now.
I'd just as soon not throw any more taxpayer money, let alone American lives, at this situation.
Continuing an occupation that facilitates the annihilation of a country and its peoples is inhumane. We have created a battlefield for the US vs. Terrorists, Insurgents, and Disaffected Youth in Iraq. There is a big difference between that and bringing Democracy to Iraq.
I imagine the Bush administration will try to do this in such a a way as to save face and declare Mission Accomplished. What worries me is that he keeps using the word Victory. Congress even put aside $20 million for a celebration of our "Victory" in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Majority of Iraqis want USA out
Baghdad's morgues are full

:clap_1: :clap_1: Legislation does not translate into good learning. Neither does more money, but I would take a raise.;-) Seriously, the most overlooked componet is parent involvement...from birth. I am sure most folks on this board do not fall into that category, but there are a large percent of irresponsible people out there. These are the same ones not teaching respect for others and the environment. No easy answers...off to work.

What a bunch of Liberal pansies.

You all remind me of that scene from the Wizard of Oz when all the little munchkins dance around singing ?Hail, Hail the witch is dead? or ?Hail, Hail Rummy is gone? in this case.

Thank goodness you all weren?t around when Patton was tearing up the Nazis.

Or when General McArthur was kicking Commie ass in Korea.

We?d all be saluting Heil Kim Jong Il if you all were running the country back then.

I agree with you all the way here. Even my parents in which one had a Doctorate and the other a Masters even used the government to help them through a rough patch....but they moved on..People who have been involved with generations of government assistance is what riles me up or people who would rather sit around all day and not try to find a job.

As a former teacher I wholeheartedly believe that every child can learn HOWEVER I agree with IWISHIWASTHERE, parents are the foundation for a childs learning. I used to have 4 & 5 year olds come to me that new nothing. Not one color, number, letter, some could not even talk.:idontno: They however were some of my best students seeing how far they came in one year.... I do know that there are some HORRIBLE teachers out there. I taught with some. What to do? I dont know...There is no pay in teaching. That is one of the reasons I left. I could wait tables or be a front of house manager and make more money. :bang: Teachers, fiiremen and policemen all should be paid more. (sorry if I left some occupation out)

also as a former teacher and director of special education at UofA, I am very concerned with America's educational system in general. You and Iwish have good points about parent involvement - this is critical - the child's home is the most important environment and determines so much about his/her success in life. But, I'm not talking about home life (or personal values) in this political discussion - this is an entirely separate and complex problem in our society (not just lack of parent participation in school, but socio-economic impacts, minimum wage/hard-working parents, lack of discipline, extreme materialistic values, lack of spirituality or respect for self or others, etc).

I'm talking about real educational goals with exceptional programs, the best of educators, and a philosophy of education that makes learning the most important and wonderful endeavor in a person's life. If our private and charter schools can do this, then why can't we expect the same of public schools as well? Government has done some good things by mandating education access for all (regardless of race, creed, handicap) - but maybe its time for the private sector to take over. Education should be available to all citizens, but maybe its not exactly a free education, and certainly a partnership between school and parents needs to be a mandate (as with charter schools).

It sounds very idealistic, but if we make education a real American priority, then I think all of the other issues, including world peace, will be handled with much more care, respect, vision, and competence. Those global citizens will be our children leading the way for the entire world. But, its gonna take a real change in the way government views the educational institution - its gonna take a lot more than a school voucher and a test. These things may have some value, but I find them insulting as a parent of a child who deserves so much more.

I still want us out of Iraq, though. Too many kids are growing up without moms or dads.

yes, I do agree with you. but without a change in American education, can you imagine the kind of wars our country will be fighting in 20 years with leaders that will make W look brilliant?
