Today was the day we've been dreading for this past year.
We had to put John to sleep this afternoon. It was time. His enlarged heart along with his arthritis and the side effects of the meds finally took its toll on his small body. I knew yesterday what was to happen today. He usually sits at the bottom of the deck stairs and waits to be picked up and brought inside but yesterday, he was lying on the ground in the melting snow and was unable to stand - his hind quarters were completely incapacitated and he never physically recovered.
Even with warning, it?s hard for a teen age boy to come to grips with the likely possibility of having to put your family pet, your lifelong friend, to sleep the next day. And so it was. The sympathetic vet delivered the news, after x-rays and examination, that none of us wanted to hear, that it was finally time.
We all 3 took turns holding him and petting him and rubbing his soft, beautiful beige fur. Then it was time and it was quick and it was quiet and he is gone.
Rudy, of course, is confused and keeps looking around for John. Mr. Johnrudy quit taking Rudy for walks because John could no longer go and it broke Mr. JR?s heart to hear John cry when he couldn?t join them. Rudy went for his first walk with Mr. JR in a long, long time tonight.
We all miss John very much ~

Chiming in late....but my heart goes out to you and your family as well. It is sooooo hard to lose a beloved pet.

I have been thinking about John almost every day since his troubles began, possibly because he is a twin to our Havanese, Butter. Your familiy obviously gave John a wonderful and long life. Then you were there to help him on his journey when he most needed you. This is the last thing we can do for a beloved pet after all the years of unconditional love they offer us. How wonderful that you were there for him at the end of one journey and for his passage. I do believe in the Rainbow Bridge.
When we lost our big Maine coon cat, Cecil two Christmases ago, I was so sad and frightened about the inevitability of that decision. It was a first for both Marty and me. We took care of Cecil for about three months and knew when his time came. Wish that I had known ahead of time how very humane and peaceful this kind of end can be. Our vet came to the house, gave Cecil a shot of Valium and he just went to sleep before the second shot. All very undramatic throughout and I was so happy that we could hold and stroke him until the very end. This is a responsibility we all take on for our pets from the day they come into our lives. And you were right to not try and protect your children from the reality of it all.
My heart goes out to you. We placed Cecil's ashes under our Christmas tree that year, since he left us only a week before. We did the same with our previous cat, George some years prior. I will always remember Cecil going under the tree and sleeping with his head on George's little pine box under the tree. He did this every year. And the funny story was that after George died, Cecil looked everywhere for him and (we think) decided that George had disappeared into the VCR slot. Cecil would paw away at the slot and meow piteously until we opened it up for him to take a sniff! (George used to hide in that cabinet to get away from the more playful Cecil, you see.)
The thing that helped me most after losing Cecil, my constant companion for some 14 years, was making a scrapbook of his life. It included photos from kittenhood up to his last days, locks of beautiful strawberry blonde hair, some pieces from favorite toys, and a print of one of his paws, his collar charms, etc. Not only did it remind me of how vibrant Cecil was for most of his life, but the comparison of early and latest photos reminded me always that we did the right thing for him at the right time. That was very comforting. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Sad news is right.
I don't think words will ever express the love and feelings we dog lovers have for our dogs. They just don't do it justice.
I hope you guys are doing well.

Thanks to all of you.
We're still sad in our house but slowly adjusting to John being gone. Rudy still goes over to John's collar that we've left on the counter. He sniffs it, yelps and runs over to one of us. Everytime he goes outside, he turns around and looks back up at us thru the door window and yelps. We open the door and he looks in, then looks down for John to come out to play.
John used to always lie next to my recliner at night when we're in the family room. It was always "his" spot - - Rudy never attempted to lay there. Last night, that's where he was lieing - - in John's spot. It touched a soft spot in our hearts.

JR, that is so sad and sweet at the same time. Isn't it amazing how an animal becomes such a part of the family routine?

OK, I know this is completely inappropriate, tacky and irreverent of me, but I got the bill today for John's cremation and it was $490!!! I am speechless. But maybe I am clueless on these things.

So sorry, JR. What a bad time of the year for this.
We had Winnie's ashes for almost two years and haven't had the emotional strength to bury them by our two miniature poodles, Mocha and Chocolat. We need to get the strength to do it.
Again, so sorry, JR.

In L'ville, the charges ran from $65 to $100, depending on the size of the dog. The actual euthanasia and other charges were separate- did your vet bundle the charges? Our cremation charges were paid directly to the crematory.
BR, we have not buried any ashes of our pets- so Kimo, Toonces, and Maisie are on the top shelf in our closet. But I am glad we could move them with us. They were in one of my kitchen cabinets in L'ville- all hangin' out together and close to us too!;-)

JohnRudy, I love your signature line. I believe that's what it's called. Since I'm new, I'm learning so much! Even when you wonder if your kids love you when they are a having a meltdown, you always know your dogs love you and think you are the best! I have to say, we still have Michi's ashes in the sealed box they gave us. We have lived in 3 houses since we have been here and Michi has been in our armoire. I don't know if it's because I can't bear to part with her or don't know where to put her ashes. We move so much, I don't want to leave her behind.
My heart goes out to you.
I'll be thinking about you and your family at Christmas.
