Congratulations on getting out there and speaking your mind. I've been reading about the situation there. Glad your safe. That protest could have gotten ugly.

And, more precisely, I think it was that he had emailed me a listing for this apartment from Craig's List in August...but the other couple rented it first.

I remember you posting this on the other thread and that would have scared the bejeebers out of me too.

Rapunzel, I'm just in shock. Seemed like such a random crime. God works in mysterious ways, you know. Good for Skunky for getting involved and speaking out.

I'm glad Skunky marched. You don't change things by sitting at home wringing your hands and worrying. Good for him and all the others who made a statement that got national attention!

Ok, wait a minute, I didn't exactly march, I just showed up at city hall, which happens to be downtown near the hospital. I stood there for about 15 minutes and watched. I did want to represent the doctor who was shot. That guy lived in a fairly sketchy area, but not so bad that I wouldn't live there...anyway, he was a family physician and worked exclusively in neighborhood clinics for the urban poor, the very same people who took his wife's life and put several slugs in him. I never met him, but he sounds like quite a character. He is Canadian, and last I heard he is heading back up there. He is exactly the type of person this city needs and he is gone for good. It was a good experience, and I hope it yields fruit. Only sour note were two kids toting a sign that read 'Bush hates black people';mercifully, they stayed in the back of the crowd and didn't act out too much.

You know, to me there are no words to describe how I feel about this situation in New Orleans. It is probably my second most favorite place to visit. However, the shape and dispair that this city is in breaks my heart. What is causing all of this bloodshed? People in desperation? Just plain mean people? God, it is so frustrating. How sad for this young couple and that baby...how sad that it could have been skunky and punzy...how sad that it was anybody.....I am rambling, I know but it is just utter saddness to me. Stay safe skunky!!!!!

I'm sorry to add that although the crime rate is so high in NO, it's disgustingly similar in many other cities, like my own. :( It was front page news two days ago when our Democrat state Senator was seriously mugged in a CVS drug store parking lot. My first reaction was that it was in one of our worse neighborhoods (where such a thing is all too common, I'm afraid). I thought it was news simply because this time the victim was a prominent citizen. But noooooo, the CVS was my CVS, only four blocks from my home. I walk there all the time, daylight and nighttime. Never gave it a second thought because it was "my" neighborhood and therefore safe. Sort of the way you'd shop the SoWal Publix and never give it a second thought. What's become of us all that there's such anger in people that murders and muggings have become so commonplace?

That is alarming and sad. I guess we all need to keep looking over our shoulder at all times.
