"south" Walton County

I'll be the first to tell you, my grammer sucks. I could never be a news journalist because of my poor grammer, or, at least I thought that was the case. While listening to the local news, I am reminded of a minor detail regarding south Walton County. The detail is that south Walton County is not the same as South Walton County. Could someone please begin educating the masses and inform them that there is only one Walton County in FL, and it's first name is not "South." When referencing the southern portion of the County, it should be noted as lower case, which is totally different than the way most people note it. Journalists should pause ever so slightly after saying "south" (slight pause) Walton County.

Thank you for listening to my little grammer shpeel (I can type that because my grammer stinks). ;-)

I have always been that one nerdy (annoying) kid who corrects everyone else's grammar. (and spelling.)
Since moving here, two things have happened:
1.) I don't correct people quite as much. (At least on the grammar endof things.)
2.) My grammar has taken a nosedive. And I love it.

But yeah.... I've noticed that you never hear about "north" Walton County. If anything happens there, they only mention Walton County. If something happens in our area, they always add the "south."

As I said, my gramme(a)r sucks. :funn:There is nothing wrong with adding, "south," to Walton County, but mostly, it is mentioned as though it is an entirely different county. Perhaps if they could determine the location of the town of Santa Rosa Beach, they wouldn't have to say "Walton County." :floor:

Welcome to my world. My mother just retired from teaching high school English. At times, her "Englishness" annoyed me. However, in the end, she done learnt me right good.

Smiley Joseppi, you are correct - there is no South Walton County. Only Walton County. We are in the southern part of that county. However, the portion south of the bay has its own nickname - South Walton - and it has been that way for years. South Walton is just another name for Santa Rosa Beach, though its certainly not official. This nickname has been used for so long by locals, businesses, realtors, etc., that it has made its way into the media, and I don't see this as being so incorrect, since it is our unofficial town name (slang for south of the bay).

South Walton is the basis for Sowal, another nickname for this town created when this site was born.

Understood, and I don't see "South Walton" as incorrect. It is only when they follow it with "County" that I have a problem. (... and the problem I have with it is only about the size of a Mosquito bite on a Yellow Flies hind quarters. -- just to keep it in perspective ;-))

Somewhere there is a business school doing a case study on the TDC's successful 'branding' of the part of the county south of the bay.

Look out Kurt, you're next!

So does your spelling, but I see little potatovixen beat me to the punch on that one.
I enjoyed your little spiel, SJ; actually, you'd fit right in with a bunch of journalists--this is the stuff they rant about all the time!
In light of all your other attributes, the problem of your grammar and spelling is only about the size of a mosquito bite on a yellow fly's hindquarters. ;-)

Who says that my problem is spelling? Maybe it is a typing problem. :idontno: I am not saying which, because both happen, too frequently.

May I ask a question SJ? In the whole scheme of things, does this really matter? I mean, you live in paradise. What the hell does it matter WHAT they call it? ;-)

Don't get me going on the use of "South Walton." I like the name "South Walton," and there is nothing incorrect about it. It is the truth, though I do agree with SJ's grammar lesson.

I could write a dissertation on the origins of South Walton and give everyone a history lesson, but I'll refrain. Maybe they will do a Grit and Grace on it one day...

It doesn't really matter that much. I just think that journalists should be better skilled with grammar. They do tend to be the only "educational tool" for very many adults. -- It is no wonder we all use such poor grammEr.

SJ - I see your point.. you would think journalists would want to be technically correct when writing/speaking about any matter. South Walton is a second name of our town. South Walton County is too, but is misleading.

Shallows - we would like a history lesson on this matter! All I know is that we've had all these different names floating around for more than 10 years.

this reminds me of something our local newspaper does that makes me insane !!! the headline last week said "two killed on local roads" and then in the article they printed a picture of a man who was a local police officer. we all thought he was one of the people killed, but they actually just put his pic there because they quoted him in the article. i thought this was terribly irresponsible.
