okay my little fitness wannabees... here it is. and thanks for deciding on this thread name. After sharing our goals and strategies for fitness and weight reduction, we'll all be sowell on sowal!!!

Cork and I are doing at least one yoga/pilates class per week now. plus we bicycled the other day (almost killed me). and plan to do exercise on our own at home as well.

as far as diet and weight reduction, we haven't really gotten very far. I'm reading two current resources for motivation and just general info: Body for Life for Women (A Woman's plan for Physical and Mental Transformation) - Pamela Peeke, MD, and The Reality Diet (fight fat with fiber) - Schnur, MD. They are both really straightforward, no nonsense approaches to weight loss - and include a lot of info on weekly menus, exercise, etc.

I know that I will need a menu plan to follow in the first 3 months of my "transformation". If I have a reasonable menu to follow, then I don't mind shopping and cooking. Having it all planned out makes it easier for me, and it makes me eat things that I would otherwise avoid or not think about eating (it expands the culinary experience)...

What are your goals? I need to finish up some of my reading and then I plan to put my goals on paper, along with my plan to achieve them. I have also already started a food and exercise journal.

I'll be sharing some of this with you. I hope we can all share successes, questions, recipes, exercise tips, etc... hope to see you on here every day looking for motivation and at the same time giving support to all of us.. :D

Wow, this thread is getting so inspiring! I really liked that article about change that I had the link to (it was about personal change and leadership change), so I incorporated it into my teaching. So, here's how I summarized what I thought was most useful from the article (and a plan for change -- not just food change, but any kind of personal change).

1. Let go of old identity and create new identity: What do you want to contribute in this life? What strengths/values can you build on? (in our case we'd be creating a healthier identity as someone who really enjoys eating well, exercising, and living healthy)

2. Clarify what you want most & what behaviors need to change to make it happen.

3. Take action (Think big, start small, fail fast, learn always):
  • Spend time on what matters most & let go of old behaviors/routines/activities
  • Take a stand regarding what you believe and express that stand in everything you say and do, repeatedly
  • Involve others
  • Determine what you will say ?yes? and ?no? to
  • Use the four ?3?s?: What will you do in 3 hours, 3 days, 3 weeks, and 3 months to make this change happen?

4. Keep track of results: How will you know you?re making progress toward the new identity? What indicators will you use?

Anyway, I found it all very inspiring and already started creating the new identity (a healthy lifestyle is part of it).

Hope this is helpful. Now i'm off to teach my last day here in Hong Kong and I fly home tomorrow morning to get ready for Halloween... It's big at our house and my sister even flies in for the festivities.

no you didn't give any such impression. I was only speaking of certain sowallers who I shall never mention here (allifunn and tootsie).

You? Allifunn? Never!

No one could possibly eat the amount of vegetable and fruit that is really required for optimal health, so I cheat, and I take this stuff
http://www.greenstoday.com
I feel like Popeye after drinking this.
It also is helps detoxify the body especially if you smoke and cuss. ;-)

Then I shall buy it by the case.

Thanks, Toots. I loved that article, too (clearly) and became very excited about creating a new identity as a way to change the way I behave regarding health. I'm going from "in a funk" to "fabulous" as my identity shift! I had a lot of fun working on my change plan. Now, we'll see if it works. I'm pretty optimistic.

Thanks Paula. Enjoyed the article. I think I will re-invent myself as Christy Brinkley and buy the Total Gym. ;-) so I can firm up my muscles.

Confession: I ate three snack packs of Peanut M&M's last night before going to bed. :(

...but someone recently told me at the gym that I look skinny. It is amazing how one can hide 225 pounds.

I am very grumpy since I started back on SoWell today. I have eaten nothing but healthy food and it makes me feel awful. I hate "detox" week- the first week without wine, butter, salty crunchy food, ice cream, and scones from Starbucks.:bang:

Cuz I have a whole closet full of clothes that I can't wear.

Cuz it feels like my blood is creeping through my arteries.

My liver won't hold out forever without a few vacations.

Don't worry- I will make an exception or two while you are here. I'm just trying to undo a little damage.:( Good living doesn't always work for me.

Nooooooo, I need you! Aren't you the South Beach queen? I was on Atkins for two years and fell off the wagon. I have gained back 21 of 28 pounds lost. I have been eating what I want for about a month probably. I started SB this morning. Any breakfast ideas?

Ok, I will try and help BC!! Do you have the book? If not, here is a few recipes from the book that I used.

Easy Asparagus and Mushroom Omelet

2 eggs
2 tablespoons water
3 stalks fresh asparagus
1/4 cup sliced mushrooms
1/4 cup shredded reduced-fat mozzeralla cheese

Boil 1" of water in a large skillet. Add the asparagus and cook, uncovered, just until tender-crisp. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs and water until the whites and the yolks are completely blended. Coat a 10" nonstick skillet with cooking spray. Heat the skillet over medium-high heat until just hot enough to sizzle when a drop of water is added. Pour in the egg mixture. It should set immediately. With a spatula, lift the edges as the mixture begins to set to allow the uncooked portion to flow underneath. When the top is set, fill one half of the omelet with the asparagus, mushrooms, and cheese. With the spatula, fold the omelet in half over the filling. Slide onto a serving plate. Serve immediately. Serves 1.

Per serving: 238 calories, 21 g protein, 5 g carbohydrates, 15 g fat, 6 g saturated fats, 260 mg sodium, 440 mg cholesterol, 1 g fiber.

Western Egg White Omelet

1 tablespoon chopped green bell pepper
1 tablespoon chopped scallion
1 tablespoon chopped red bell pepper
1/3 cup liquied egg substitute
3 tablespoons shredded reduced-fat cheese

Lightly coat a medium skillte with cooking spray. Saute' the peppers and the scallions until they are tender-crisp. Pour the egg substitute over the vegetables. When partially set, spread the cheese over half of the egg substitute and fold the omelet in half over the filling. Continue cooking until cooked through. Serve immediately. Serves 1.

Per Serving: 169 calories, 20 g protein, 4 g carbohydrates, 8 g fat, 3 g saturated fats, 320 mg sodium, 15 mg cholesterol, 1 g fiber.

Bon Appetit!!!!!!

Good Luck, BC. I really liked most of the recipes in the book. You have to like to cook to follow this program. I got a little lazy the last few months, but I am going to get back in the swing of things.

You tell her, BC!! :clap_1: And, cheers to YOU for starting SB this AM. Maybe I should go on it with you, since obviously just eating healthy hasn't worked so well for a while!
