okay my little fitness wannabees... here it is. and thanks for deciding on this thread name. After sharing our goals and strategies for fitness and weight reduction, we'll all be sowell on sowal!!!

Cork and I are doing at least one yoga/pilates class per week now. plus we bicycled the other day (almost killed me). and plan to do exercise on our own at home as well.

as far as diet and weight reduction, we haven't really gotten very far. I'm reading two current resources for motivation and just general info: Body for Life for Women (A Woman's plan for Physical and Mental Transformation) - Pamela Peeke, MD, and The Reality Diet (fight fat with fiber) - Schnur, MD. They are both really straightforward, no nonsense approaches to weight loss - and include a lot of info on weekly menus, exercise, etc.

I know that I will need a menu plan to follow in the first 3 months of my "transformation". If I have a reasonable menu to follow, then I don't mind shopping and cooking. Having it all planned out makes it easier for me, and it makes me eat things that I would otherwise avoid or not think about eating (it expands the culinary experience)...

What are your goals? I need to finish up some of my reading and then I plan to put my goals on paper, along with my plan to achieve them. I have also already started a food and exercise journal.

I'll be sharing some of this with you. I hope we can all share successes, questions, recipes, exercise tips, etc... hope to see you on here every day looking for motivation and at the same time giving support to all of us.. :D

Dear KDW,

How long did it take you to lose 50 lbs. on South Beach and how long have you kept it off?

It took me about 10 months. I started it 2 years ago this January. Now, I must admit however I have gained 10 back in last few months. I am not happy about that, because I still need to lose about 34 lbs. I am not going to beat myself up about it though. I know I can and will do it. Good luck to you, and please keep us updated on your progress!!!

I lost about 15 pounds on the south beach diet a few years ago (plus walking). Though I gained 10 back, I've kept the other 5 off with no problem, so I consider that a success since I think many people gain most of the pounds back after such a crash diet. I really think South Beach Diet give people motivation because it works so quickly, but it's not good to stay on it (or at least not the original one) for very long because it doesn't let you have whole grains or fruits which are so good for you and should be part of any healthy diet.

This is very true Paula. I was maintaining my weight loss until I let myself slip and started eating the "bad" carbs again. I know that is why I gained some of the weight back. Once you slip, you have to go through the week of no carbs to get control of the cravings again. I know that is how is it is with me anyway. I feel so much better when I am eating the whole grains. I am on a mission to do it again!!!!

Great website. The other ones always depress me. According to this one, I have 11 lbs to lose to be in the normal weight range and anything else I lose will be a bonus. Thanks -- you made my day!

I lost 3 lbs since the weekend before Halloween and would like to lose 5 more (ambitious) before Thanksgiving for my high school reunion.

That website is VERY motivating because it's realistic...

okay, I just did the ideal weight calculation. It says I need to lose 20 pounds. But the least is 10. which is correct? I think 20.

just a tidbit of info for sowell wenches only: I'm having ankle surgery, finally, in January. I need to get into shape and be as healthy as I can be going into surgery (please give me motivation now to eat right and continue to exercise). Then I'll be on crutches for 3 months, non-weight bearing, and exercise is gonna be very limited. But, Bridgette is going to come up with some private pilates/yoga stuff to help keep moving after surgery to the extent that I can. Just letting you know this - because I will be on this thread asking for motivation from now on !!! believe me, I'll be happy to get this done and get on with it.

Toots, there is NO WAY you are 20 lbs overweight. You are tiny. I am sorry you are going to have to have surgery but we will be here for you and we will crack the whip when you feel it is time. Just don't over eat and you will be fine.

You do not have to lose 20 pounds. I looked at the same site and I'm happy to take the high end of the weight which says I need to lose 10 lbs to be in the healthy range, and it sounds like you should take the 10 pounds as correct. You looked great when I last saw you. The main thing seems to be to do what it takes to take care of that ankle. Sounds like it will be hard for you to chase spidey around for a while. Is your husband going to serve you healthy snacks while you aren't able to get around? We can all post our recommendations -- e.g., blueberries or bananas in lowfat yogurt with splenda would be a great snack. There are also some great low-cal ice cream treats for about 40 calories or less.

I read in Oprah magazine last night (or one of the many magazines I get -- I think of them as my relaxation and life therapy), if a person does exercise worth just 100 more calories a day, she would lose 10 lbs at the end of a year. Same goes for eating just 100 fewer calories a day. I thought that was pretty inspirational.

Toots, I'm happy for you that you're getting this done if it will improve your quality of life. I know you suffer a lot of pain as it is. I hate the crutches thing though...but hey, just think of all the extra cals you'll burn lugging those things around. And your upper body strength will be great!

looking forward to life on crutches.. with many levels of stairs, driving with left foot and shopping at publix in my electric cart (been there done that - just takes getting used to but not that bad - and people I don't know constantly come up and tell me their leg or ankle stories..). spidey is going to be my personal servant. it'll be good training for him.

meanwhile, okay, if I can drop 10 by January I'll be happy. and then I can re-evaluate later! :D

crushed in car accident 5 years ago - after emergency reconstructive surgery its just gone downhill and needs to be fused - which is a standard fix for a bad ankle. it should end the arthritis, swelling and pain. and this is a very very good thing!!!

I am really excited. really!

I know you'll be glad. My mom had rheumatoid arthritis and had several joints fused through the years.

Hi Toots. I'll be around last week of February too and can bring limoncello cream if that would help your recovery...

Moved the conversation from "Thanksgiving recipes" to Sowell. I looked like a Holocaust victim at 115. I feel best at 125. That photo of me on the other thread is two years old BTW. If I get down to 125, I might need a neck job.:funn:
