I'm headed to Tallahassee on Monday. On the rare occasions I've gone in the past I've taken I-10, but am considering taking Hwy 20 this time. Good idea? Does it take extra time? If so, how much? Thanks in advance for your input.

We used that as a hurricane evacuation route for Dennis because we didn't want to get caught in interstate stop and go. You can't go 75+ like you can with I-10, but the only real slow parts are a couple of stoplights as you cross the highways that lead into PCB and the small towns on either side of the Apalachicola River.

We prefer 20 as it is much shorter mileage-wise but almost identical time-wise. As Beachmouse stated, follow the speed limit in Bristol and Blountstown.

My thanks to both of you. 20 it is!

It depends where in Tallahassee - for football/FSU I go 20, for the other side of town I take the Interstate.

Not for football, sb, but to a couple of different places in town. And I feel more comfortable allowing Jr. Critter some driving practice (yes, with permit) on 20, so everybody wins.

I think 20 is prettier, just don't like driving through town so I take I-10 to get to the other side.
Good wildlife, and I love driving through small towns - luckily you can mostly ignore the abortion signs.

If you don't have to be there at a certain time, and especially for driving practice, 20 is fine. ShallowsFuzz prefers taking 20, and I am not taking ShallowsSquirt up to I-10 again until he drives himself to college. We went from DFS to Crestview with him driving earlier this year and it took a long time for me to uncurl from the fetal position.
I prefer I-10 because I do not pass when I drive, I like to go 65 - 70 or faster, and invariably I get behind a slow truck pulling a boat. And then there was the time I got behind the Homecoming Torch run from FSU Panama City to Doak.
Edit: be sure you will not need a restroom before you get to Blountstown. I'm just sayin.'

Having made that trip a thousand times in school, I'd vote 20. It's a more enjoyable ride, takes less gas, and there's less traffic. Plus it dump out right into florida state / center of town. With 10, you end up going way north of the city.

Somewhat tangential (my middle name) but we were talking about where we want to retire. Hubby mentioned Gainesville because of the great medical facilities and being able to go to Gator sports events. We'd keep the beach house in the Panhandle.
Question: Who has experience driving from the 30A area to Gainesville? Bob? How long does it take? Which route do you take?
My first choice is Atlanta near Pill Hill. We know that it takes almost 6 hours to get to 30A from there. And that's with no traffic jams.
