The St. Joe Company hopes an upcoming project will provide more convenient housing opportunities for its employees.

According to Mike Kerrigan, spokesman for the company, the local land development group plans to build an apartment complex specifically geared toward its employees on more than 9 acres of land located off Griffin Boulevard in Panama City Beach.

The lot sits between the Beach Mosquito Control District and Conservation Park.

"It's very exciting," Kerrigan said. "It's definitely going to provide a level of convenience to our employees to where in another situation, they might have to make a much longer commute to work. (This) will help us recruit folks to work at our properties and we think it's something that our employees will be very excited about."

While many aspects of the apartment complex remain in the works, Kerrigan said he hopes it will break ground sometime next year. Construction then will take more than a year, which would mean the facility could open sometime in 2023.

Kerrigan did not yet know the layout of the units or the cost of rent.

"We know that housing can be difficult, especially on the Beach near some of our properties," he said. "(We would like) to get it completed as quickly as we can because we know that with the number of projects that we have in the works and the number of employment opportunities and jobs that those projects are creating, there will be a need for this housing for our workforce."
