Hope there are some warmer temps around. Like at the beach. It is a very cold 20 here this morning in Memphis. Don't mind it so much just going out to the car to go to work but when the pooch still demands his walk and I am donning a hat, big coat and gloves, well, sometimes that is too much. Especially when my sinuses are a mess. I am sure it is this cold all throughout the midwest and a large part of the southeast, except for the Florida panhandle.

On my way to work this morning they were saying 300,000 people were still without power in St. Louis, and that utility companies from 7 states were there helping. Ours may be one of them.
I hope most of those folks have a fireplace and lots of wood!

I have a pretend fireplace that warmed up the house pretty well with the help of a generator;-)
Seriously though, there are lots of folks who are getting desperate. Yesterday I went to the laundromat for the first time in about 15 years (didn't know when the power would be back on....apparently neither did the other 3 dozen or so folks who were in line to use the 20 washers and dryers that were available...aargh!

But hopefully it is a short lived situation. MAN-go sees in some of the laundromats homeless people who come in for warmth.

It breaks my heart too. So many of the old folks have so much pride and never ask for help. You spending time with him helped him more than you probably realize. My dad died about 7 yrs ago and I was always so grateful for those who would just talk to him some because I knew he was lonely.
Thanks for helping him out - - that's what life is about.

I'm worried for this elderly man now. I hope he and his poochy make it through this. The dog has a better chance than he does. No fireplace and no electricity is not a good thing with those temperatures. I hope his power has come back on also.

Me too. So sweet of you Luvthebeach, to take the time to help him.
The world needs more people like you. God bless the old man and his wife. I'm praying for all the people without power. Yesterday when we were at the mall, an elderly lady walked into the restroom and entered the stall and looked all around kind of confused. She pulled on the door lock and mumbles something like----do these slide or what? I realized she was looking for the door. Samantha was standing there just watching. I walked over and showed her that the door was just on the inside against the stall and pulled it for her. She thanked me and we walked out. I told Sam that someday we might be old and confused like that and we need to help others in need without hesitation. So many things have changed for them like automatic flushing toilets and water faucets. The lady might have thought the stall had some kind of new fangled door for all we know.

Yesterday morning was -9 and windy so this doesn't feel so bad.
I heard on the radio today that Fargo has 400 plus homeless on any one day, including winter months. (December and January can be so brutal.) The number surprised me. We give to many charities, including national organizations that run shelters, but I truthfully don't know what the local needs are. I am definitely going to do some research on this.

That is amazing cold! My grandmother came to the US from Norway as a child and they lived in a cabin in South Dakota that had no electricity...how they did it, I just can't fathom.

BRRR.
It's nice to see your wanting to help the homeless Krafty. :clap_1:
The sad truth is that most of them don't want to go the shelters though.
I had a friend who volunteered for an organization in NYC that drove around at night and distributed food, blankets, medicines, things like that for the ones who wouldn't go to shelters because they are scared of being harmed or robbed of what little they have. There may be an organization like that in your area.

When our electricity goes out during a storm and it's below zero and the wind is howling it always makes us think of 'the old days' when they NEVER had such creature comforts. I can't imagine how they did it either!

i just walked in the door from work - it is 16 degrees...

Hi Krafty from North Dakota!!! :clap_1: Where have you been?

I don't even want to check the temperature, to tell you the truth, because I have to take a walk today (someone had too many birthday goodies yesterdayLove the jammie visual! I bet you look adorable!). I will tell you, though, that I broke down and hauled out the winter clothing this weekend. I was trying not too for as long as I could! The flannels have gone on the beds and flannel jammies under the pillows.
Speaking of flannel jammies, I just bought the cutest Nick&Nora ones, with pink flamingoes and jet stream trailers printed on it. Corny as all get-out but those silly flamingoes crack me up all the time. I got them at Target. :clap_1:
it was a perfect 13 degrees when i got up just a little bit ago, although it is up to 18 now. it was 18 last nght when we drove around looking at lights. yay !!!!!!! bring on the below zeros !!

Yesterday I went to the laundromat for the first time in about 15 years (didn't know when the power would be back on....apparently neither did the other 3 dozen or so folks who were in line to use the 20 washers and dryers that were available...aargh!) Anyway, as I was waiting for my clothes to dry I watched a little old man walk in to the laundomat with a tiny bag of clothes...he looked so lost and confused. After watching him for about 5 minutes, I walked over and asked if he needed help. He greatfully accepted my help, saying he had never been to a laundromat and he needed to wash a few things before he headed over to the nursing home for his daily visit with his wife. He commented on how toasty warm it was in the laundromat. Turns out he's 87 years old; his wife is in a nursing home and he lives alone with his dog. He hasn't had power since Thursday evening (which is when most of us lost our power); I asked where he was staying, and he answered very matter-of-factly that he was staying in his home until the power comes back on. Now mind you, our temps have dropped to 11 degrees overnight, and this little old man was living there in the cold darkness with his dog...he said he has no fireplace, just "lots of warm clothes and blankets". I asked him couldn't he just stay at the nursing home with his wife until the power comes back on, but he replied that he could, but that he was going to tough it out with his dog. I tried to convince him that this was not a good idea, but he was adament. I stayed with him until his clothes were in the dryer and we talked. Sweet little old man..he reminded me of my own daddy who passed away 5 years ago at the age of 89. Hopefully his power is back on by now. This weather and power outage is tough on old folks, even those who think they are tough enough to stick it out without seeking help!
you are so sweet! I hope he fairs well.

Oh, you know, working, etc....I check in once in awhile to see what's goin' on and if Kurt has new tours posted. I lOVE looking at the beach when it's cold out. Sometimes when we're driving down the road on a moonlit night we imagine that the snow on the hills is sand on the dunes. If the windows weren't so cold it would almost work!

There is a funny part to the story. The way I found out his age was, in the midst of our conversation, he said ?how old do you think I am?? Not wanting to insult him just in case I was wrong, I replied ?75?; as he broke into a huge grin, he said ?87, but watch this? at which time he dropped to the floor and began doing push-ups! He was so cute; folks around him were grinning and I know holding their breath in the hope that he didn?t hurt himself. :clap_1:
Another cute thing was when, after I helped him load his clothes into the washer, he said to me ?I have to ask?..you?re a Christian, aren?t you?? I replied ?Yes I am?. He says ?what are you, Baptist??. I replied ?No, Catholic?. His response was ?Well, that?s okay too.?
You couldn?t help but love the little guy!

We're going to get to 39 above on Sat. If it's not windy that's golfing weather!
I have a question for someone smart. I just got back from my 3 mile run outside. I was multi-layered clothed on my body (only exposed skin was my eyelids), wore thermal lined mittens, but I only wore regular Saucony running shoes and not-so-thick socks. My feet stayed toasty warm. At a -20 windchill I expected my toes to feel at least a little nippy. This may be a dumb question, but why didn't they?

We started out in the mid 30's this morning but the temps have been dropping all day. It is 27 degrees right now and the low overnight they are showing to be 17. Wind chills will make it feel like 10-15.

I left Memphis yesterday early am for a conference in central Florida--it was in the low 20s in Memphis (and I thought I'd left cold NY for the sunny south!) But its not warm here in Orlando either (mid 50s and windy). I was feeling rather sorry for myself till college son called from Boston--where it was a high of 8 degrees on Friday.
Its all a matter what you're used to, I guess.
Hope y'all are fareing well...its been a busy fall, and I've missed this group.
