I don?t own a Blackberry or personal digital assistant, but all my really important friends do ? or maybe they just seem important because they own one. It?s like the great chicken and egg debate and which came first, but I?m skipping ahead and will find a way more meaningful way to bring poultry into this discussion in a moment.
I have a close friend I?ll call Bob, since that is indeed his real name, whowho constantly pecks away just under the table with his little Blackberry toothpick during dinner checking important emails, stock reports, rearranging his calendar and appointments, glancing up just enough to act interested in my haiku about the eerie similarities of the debates on illegal immigration and native versus non-native landscaping.
His Blackberry has become an obsession and makes me feel like a nobody because I?m able to get through an entire twelve pounds of mashed Russet potatoes at the Red Bar without anyone emailing or calling to tell me that the meeting in Zurich has just been moved to Milan.
I?m too embarrassed to admit that the real reason I don?t own a PDA is because the only important person who ever emails me is Salamatu Doudou, the deposed Interior Minister of Nigeria, who asked for my help in transferring several million dollars in stolen Nigerian money in exchange for a cut.
The only important appointment I have to keep track of is with JoAnn, my understanding parole officer who personally agrees that there are far worse crimes than floundering in the nude - like bringing rotel dip to a dinner party for example.
So rather than admit to being such an obvious nobody, I lie and tell everyone the reason I don?t have a Blackberry is because I instead feel a strong sense of noblesse oblige to my longtime PGA or Personal Guatemalan Assistant, Manolo.
Aside from making me seem important in a retro sort of way, it also makes me come across as deeply caring since outsourcing his job to a Blackberry would make me no better than those cold hearted snakes at American Poultry Processors who replaced my great uncle Waylan with an automated giblet bagger - this after he had given them twenty two years of loyal service and several of his fingertips.
Don?t get me wrong, I?m not completely out of touch with technology. I do have a cheap cell phone with an Earth, Wind and Fire ring tone the size of one of those huge green phones with six foot antennas the soldiers in Vietnam War movies use to call in bombing strikes against Viet Cong sanctuaries along the Laotian border.
Unfortunately, every one knows that important calls are taken on phones the size of postage stamps and aren?t generally announced through a poor digital rendition of Boogie Wonderland.
So, I have come to hate the Blackberry and all the other knockoff PDA?s such as Ocean Spray?s Cranappleberry and Johnson & Johnson?s new Dingleberry with an optical colon scope instead of a digital camera.
Blackberries seem to dominate the lives of everybody who have them like spoiled children and Amway.
I also hate them because they make me realize how boring and simple my own life must be because I?m able to manage it just fine without one.

I'm guilty. I had a Blackberry before I saw the light and got a Sidekick.
Besides. I'm like a spoiled child anyway.
And my friends are always late, so it's nice to have something to make me look important.
Nice dissertation though. :clap_1:

I have to admit they are addictive (much like this SoWal site  ) But I don't have mine to try to look important. In fact, I put it out of the way when I'm with company. But it has proven to be a most useful tool when I have to be out of the office. It cuts down on phone calls, and allows me to take messages and decide which, if any, need my immediate attention. In meetings/conferences, it keeps me from having to step out to take a call. The only drawback is that it tends to make one a bit of a work-a-holic. I often find myself checking it on weekends, in the evenings, etc., or when I'm surfing the SoWal site!

WU, keep them coming. I cannot believe the Sun rejected your writing. Maybe if you had a Blackberry.... :funn:I am certain that there is a major newspaper with your name on it, somewhere.

the end about your boring life could be describing me perfectly. i remember when a few months ago all the pharmacists at work got those pda's to download stuff on, and they make fun of me for not having one. hell, i can't even go a whole night without locking up at least one computer - can't imagine what i could do to a pda or blackberry ! it's terrible to be a technological idiot - especially when you are married to an electronics geek 😀

Call me a Luddite but I don't want one either! And the only reason we have cell phones, even, is that they function as pseudo umbilical cords to the teenagers.

Hmmmmm......we may well be related. There isn't a computer, printer,or copy machine that I cannot bring to a grinding halt. Sometimes just by being in the same room with it! It's a rare gift/curse. Glad to meet you!

Heh heh heh. I bet none of you ever broke a mouse, like I did the first time I got on a computer. I've been only slightly less inept since then. God only knows what I'd do with a blackberry...oh wait, never will happen...keys too small for middle-aged eyes to see....

i can do ya one better - we started barcoding over the summer at work, and all the medications have to be scanned. the first time i went to use the barcoding machine i couldn't figure out how to turn it on. boy did that get the laughs - i was teased for a month over that one. and one time the scanner gun got caught on my belt loop and i pulled it right out of the machine - boss not happy !

Mermaid...that's too much!!! How did that happen?
Mr. Kitty uses reading glasses, maam*!!! Speaking of which...he is getting one of those gizmos that magnifies and lights up (about the size of a credit card) so one can see menus, checks, etc.
If Mr. K ever "makes fun" of me being on sowal.com, all I say in response is.......
"BLACKBERRY" Cuts him off everytime! wheeeeeeeeeeeee!
* why do I want to type this as ma'am????

Gameboy (for kids) = Blackberry (for adults). There is no difference. You could give the Gameboy to the adult and the Blackberry to the kid, and each would still be happy, satisfied, annoying, and addicted.

I came vey close to throwing a Blackberry in Western Lake last summer. We shared a house with good friends from Atlanta, and their 1 yr. old little boy. We were all looking forward to a week of relaxation and spending time together...but our friend had turned into a total work freako.
I can understand checking into the office once (maybe even twice) a day if that gives you peace of mind, but this guy went over the edge. He didn't get a good signal on his 'berry, and had to walk over to the lake bank to do his 'berry thing, which made him nuts and grumpy. Every time I turned around, he was "at the lake", and when he wasn't, he was pacing the house in frustration. I think he walked down to the beach 3 times the whole week. His wife decided that maybe a 3 day vacation was all he could handle!!

I now have a new phone.😀
