The Stranger
A few months before I was born, my Dad met a stranger who was new to our
small Tennessee town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this
enchanting newcomer and soon invited him to live with our family.

The stranger was quickly accepted and was around to welcome me into the
world a few months later. As I grew up, I never questioned his place in
my family. In my young mind, he had a special niche.
My parents were complementary instructors: Mom taught me the word of God,
and Dad taught me to obey it. But the stranger He was our storyteller. He would
keep us spellbound for hours on end with adventures, mysteries and comedies.

If I wanted to know anything about politics, history or science, he always
knew the answers about the past, understood the present and even seemed able
to predict the future! He took my family to the first major league ball
game. He made me laugh, and he made me cry. The stranger never stopped talking, but Dad didn't seem to mind.

Sometimes, Mom would get up quietly while the rest of us were shushing
each other to listen to what he had to say, and she would go to her room and
read her books (I wonder now if she ever prayed for the stranger to leave.)

Dad ruled our household with certain moral convictions, but the stranger
never felt obligated to honor them. Profanity, for example, was not allowed
in our home... not from us, our friends or any visitors. Our longtime visitor,
however, got away with four-letter words that burned my ears and made my dad squirm and my mother blush.

My Dad was a teetotaler who didn't permit alcohol in the home, not even for
cooking. But the stranger encouraged us to try it on a regular basis. He
made cigarettes look cool, cigars manly and pipes distinguished. He talked
freely (much too freely!) about sex. His comments were sometimes blatant,
sometimes suggestive, and generally embarrassing.

I now know that my early concepts about relationships were influenced
strongly by the stranger. Time after time, he opposed the values of my
parents, yet he was seldom rebuked... and NEVER asked to leave.

More than fifty years have passed since the stranger moved in with our
family. He has blended right in and is not nearly as fascinating as he
was at first. Still, if you were to walk into my parent's den today, you
would still find him sitting over in his corner, waiting for someone to listen to him
talk and watch him draw his pictures.

His name?.... We just call him, "TV."

He has a younger sister now. We call her, "computer."

Depending on the age of the laptop, you may have a wireless card built in or you can get sprint pcs or cingular or a number of other carriers have a wireless service that's $80 a month for unlimited access. In fact cingular may have a 3 month trial or something where you could can it when your dones. I used the aircard for about 3 years as my sole access and it was pretty reliable except for Grayton and part of Inlet but now with builtin technology, some people (not me) can pick up an unsecured network anywhere and I have my own wireless router at home so don't need the aircard anymore but they're still available and work great.

There's what's known as an aircard that sticks in the side of a laptop, (probably a desktop also if you have the slot). This card picks up signals from cell towers to get you onto the internet. You can use the cell service to be on the internet about anywhere there's a cell. The service costs about $80/month for unlimited access. And the price of the card to pick it up is probably about $150. It's a bit pricey for a week's use and if you don't use the computer much but a pretty good service. You can be on the internet the whole time hubby is driving.

If you just need a week to get mail and be on the board, I'm sure I have one around here that will boot up. Have 2 extras that I know of, just need to charge one and see if the other will start up (it's been a while since I've started them but they're both less than 2 years old).

Sounds like that thingie is your card so you might be in good shape. My new little puppy, the tiny tiny Sony laptop has the card built in. I'm so hard on them. I shoved the last one in a bag too quick and busted the little thingie! :bang:. The one before that, I tried to carry the laptop and the cat upstairs to bed and cracked the screen. Ouch! It was a 2 month old Sony. :bang: . I need to learn to keep the gray matter with me at all times.

There's nothing like a Sony  Have had 4 sony's (one run over with a car  , one with the cracked screen :bang: one that had ME Operating system which stinks and the new puppy, Have also had a dell (crashed in about 3 months), a compaq (proprietary everything but pretty sturdy), an averatec (really cheap and all the ports started going in 6 months) and probably others.

You really need to do something to destroy the sonys. I have one that has duct tape holding the screen together and it still works :clap_1: :clap_1: but now I've lost the power pack.

I've bought all of my sony's online on either pricegrabbers.com or last one on ebay. Paid $1350 for the new Sony t-360 (real tiny) which was running about $2100K in stores when I bought it. It was a broken box but had everything I needed and works great. Had never been booted up when I received it so wasn't a floor model which I wouldn't buy because of the hours on the monitor. Unless you travel a lot and move it around a lot, you can probably go with a larger model. I drag mine everywhere so weight and size are crucial to me.
