Well...today I was a substitute teacher at the high school that I graduated from. I was approached by my old high school geography teacher to come in and sit with her class until next Tuesday while she has a burr removed from her heel. High school has changed so much since I was there--and that was only 5 years ago. I saw so much mischief in the halls-inappropriate touching, cussing, threatening and even some slipping of what appeared to be illegal substances! It was an eventful but fun day to say the least. First, when I went to check in this morning at the front office, the assistant principal thought that I was a student and asked me what I was doing back behind the counter. She immediately apologized and said that "she has heard a lot about me." This school is on a block schedule, so I only had three classes and a planning period today. The students were really nice and wanted to know all about college and about becoming a lawyer. I carried on a conversation with them, since their only assignment was to complete a study guide for their final exams next week. Tomorrow they will hand in a their final papers and we will watch "Madagascar," and they are given the opportunity to write an one page extra credit paper over it.
I hope I have as much fun tomorrow, wish me luck!

I don't think you need luck...you sound like you're in control to me. A story...my husband, an engineer and teacher, now retired, met one of his students the other day who said to him "Wow Mr. ***, you still look good!" Oh, the thankless job of being a teacher :floor: I guess he could have said "Wow Mr. ***, you're still alive?!" My poor, sweet husband

Sounds like you had a great day. Substitute teachers usually get unruly behavior from students!
Good luck!

Yes, it does sound like you had a good day, albeit a bit of an eye-opener! 😱 It doesn't surprise me that the kids wanted to talk to you about what you're doing. I find that teens these days are always interested in the world and people in it (based on my little world of my own teens and their friends ;-) ).

I cannot begin to imagine what it is like to be a sub. I wouldn't last long in that line of work.

If students' behavior blows your mind after only 5 years, imagine what those of us that have been out much longer feel. 😱 Good Luck and have funn!

You know, maybe you would like being a teacher. My son is a HS freshman and he loves most of his teachers. Says they are so cool and fun. They learn more when the teacher is fun, interesting AND interested.
