Dave, you mention Homeland Security being the ultimate oxymoron, only sentences after stating that there have been no American deaths related to terrorist attacks on American soil. If there have been no related deaths on our homeland, wouldn't it suggest that the Dept of Homeland Security IS actually working?

What about total American death in Iraq and Afganistan?

McBush and McCain would like us to believe that we are in a World Wide War (WW 3)on terror, why aren't they included in the numbers--if our soldiers are being killed by Al Qeda over there, and if we are nation building in these 2 countries then there should be no physical distinction of U.S. boundaries, and no distinction of terrorist caused deaths.

hnooe, Dave was talking about HOMELAND Security, as in security of the people in the USA, not security of people abroad. I was simply replying to what he posted.

I love that a terrorist can simply go on line and pick the large event they might want to bomb. Without all the annoyance of looking in a newspaper.

American soldiers are just other "people abroad," away the U.S., even if they are killed by Al Qeda?

Sorry, I am off topic here--I guess this is a whole different thread SJ, I think Homeland Security is a joke--it seperates our troops from "Us." Homeland Security is just a "feel good" term for disconnected, unaffected civilians. A lot of Americans don't feel any real personal connection to our troops abroad, I am just on a rant about how seperate our troops are from us, compared to other declared wars in our history. No reponse to this post needed here.

Ahhh, JOe you always make me think....My point, albeit subtle is we are more of a danger to ourselves than terrorism is a danger to us.

So now my question to you is how many deaths occurred in America due to terrorism prior to 911 and homeland security? My point exactly....

A moment of silence for the over 3,000 people killed on 9/11.

Dave wasn't disrespecting the victims of 9-11, he was just trying to put things in perspective $ spent vs. actual risk!

from: http://www.reason.com/news/show/36765.html

........if terrorists were to destroy entirely one of America's 40,000 shopping malls per week, your chances of being there at the wrong time would be about one in one million or more. Rothschild also estimated that if terrorists hijacked and crashed one of America's 18,000 commercial flights per week that your chance of being on the crashed plane would be one in 135,000.

Even if terrorists were able to pull off one attack per year on the scale of the 9/11 atrocity, that would mean your one-year risk would be one in 100,000 and your lifetime risk would be about one in 1300. (300,000,000 ? 3,000 = 100,000 ? 78 years = 1282) In other words, your risk of dying in a plausible terrorist attack is much lower than your risk of dying in a car accident, by walking across the street, by drowning, in a fire, by falling, or by being murdered.

So do these numbers comfort you? If not, that's a problem. Already, security measures?pervasive ID checkpoints, metal detectors, and phalanxes of security guards?increasingly clot the pathways of our public lives. It's easy to overreact when an atrocity takes place?to heed those who promise safety if only we will give the authorities the "tools" they want by surrendering to them some of our liberty. As President Franklin Roosevelt in his first inaugural speech said, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself? nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance." However, with risks this low there is no reason for us not to continue to live our lives as though terrorism doesn't matter?because it doesn't really matter. We ultimately vanquish terrorism when we refuse to be terrorized.

Dave is the one who mentioned that no Americans have died in the US due to terrorism since 9-11. I am simply using his statement to question his statement. Nothing more. If Dave had mentioned the number of innocent civilians killed by our actions, and the number of American troops who have been wounded or killed in combat, "fighting terrorism," that would be a different story, but still wouldn't make "Homeland Security" an oxymoron.

Someone mentioned that we make it easier for the terrorists to find our large events to target, by posting them online. I am sure that one reason why the alert status hasn't gone below yellow is due to the terrorists waiting for us to drop our guard and wave the green, no threat, flag before attacking.

Dave, MediaCON is out too frequently to be considered unusual activity. lol

I cannot recall the number of people who died in 9-11. It seems like it was over 4,000. I also have no idea how many people have died in the War on Terror (retaliation). One would think that if a country like the US wanted to show the terrorists that we would retaliate, we would do so on a slightly stronger level than the original attack. Instead, in this War, we have lost many more thousands of our own people, while trying to "get even," and plenty of thousands of innocent Iraqi people on top of that. Seems like Congress and the President have some loose screws.
