Those evil Koch Brothers

More than a thousand miles from the labor tumult in Wisconsin ? where his name shows up on the signs of protesters and a liberal blogger impersonating him got through to the governor on the phone and said ?gotta crush that union!? ? the real David H. Koch was greeted rather more warmly here Friday when he officially opened a new cancer research institute bearing his name.

Mr. Koch and his brother Charles, both No. 5 in Forbes?s list of the richest Americans, are targets of liberal activists.

Mr. Koch, a billionaire who is perhaps best known for his family?s contributions to conservative causes, got a standing ovation from scientists, Nobel laureates and politicians of various political stripes as he opened the new David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which he gave $100 million to help build. And in a brief, and rare, interview, Mr. Koch, 70, spoke of his hopes for the new center, his prostate cancer and the prank call heard around the world.

?I read stuff about me and I say, ?God, I?m a terrible guy,? ? he said. ?And then I come here and everybody treats me like I?m a wonderful fellow, and I say, ?Well, maybe I?m not so bad after all.? ?

I can see the HuffPo headlines already: "BREAKING NEWS - Koch Brothers fund cancer cure, but are they only trying to save republicans?"

Yeah, right. He's justifying himself when he gives 100 million to research a cure that might give my wife a few more years to enjoy her grandchildren. Instead of finding fault, I'll just say, thank you, you're generousity is appreciated by some.

There are many kind people in the world.

''The death of John Gotti is probably the saddest day to me since Sept. 11,'' said Carmine Romeo, a retiree who has lived in the area for 18 years, as he stood a few blocks from the club's old site. ''John Gotti was bigger than New York, bigger than Hollywood, bigger than life.''
Like many others in this neighborhood, Mr. Romeo has vivid memories of the neighborhood fireworks Mr. Gotti sponsored every year on July 4, the small kindnesses he showed his neighbors, and the way his reputation seemed to improve business and keep the neighborhood nearly free of crime. ''You see all this graffiti?'' said JoyceAnn Domenico, gesturing at a brick wall on 101st Avenue. ''We would never have had this if he were here. There's so much crime now, and we never had that when he was here.''
Others recalled Mr. Gotti's generosity. ''You used to see him giving the neighborhood kids money,'' said Lawrence Lescio, who stood on the sidewalk reminiscing with Ms. Domenico. ''He'd buy them all ice cream.'' Ms. Domenico recalled how Mr. Gotti once accosted her, asking about the Yorkshire terrier he had often seen her walking. She explained that the dog had died.
''He told me, 'You want another dog?' '' she said wonderingly.

Andy, I give to research also. Not saying that what he did was not good, was saying he feels that is what makes him good.

There are some guys who help old ladies cross the street, on the way to the office where they lobby to cut that old lady's social security income.

People, on the whole, are some really weird people.

The Koch's, the Rockellefellers and their ilk all give money to fund medical establishments because to overshadow the fact that they make enormous amounts of money by censoring research and scientific findings. Sick people are big business and they all have huge interests in big pharma.

One simple analogy is that organized crime has always been into some legitimate businesses. OK, maybe this isn't an analogy.

and the charitable giving is all tax deductible...

I have no problem with anyone, of any persuasion, giving to anything or sponsoring anything, as long as they are upfront about it...not trying to deliberately cover their behavior.

Interesting that after MSNBC and others revealed with great emphasis that Freedom Works and the Koch Brothers were indeed the money behind the Tea Party gatherings, Freedom Works is no longer denying it.

However, if Rachael Maddow had not continued to talk about it and show the connection, many would have continued to believe that it was "just regular grassroots folks...who are concerned about government spending."

He's a billionaire cancer sufferer who gives millions to find cures for the disease he has. Sadly, he has been fighting cancer since 1992.

I think it's great that he donates so much money (more than $200 million) to this cause and I think his approach and money will help many people, but it doesn't cancel out all of his negative actions.

Or the many conflicts of interest.

Giving money for cancer research at the same time you are fighting to keep one of your company's products from being classified as a carcinogen is ridiculous.

what?

Koch Industries produces through Koch Membrane Systems a vast amount of the chemicals that go into all pharmaceutical products. They are essentially a feeder for Big Pharma. The Koch Institute at MIT also has a strategic partnership with Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals. Ortho-McNeil-Janssen is a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson.
