I think our politics thread is stuck in a bit of a rut. I keep looking for a thread about something else but I haven't seen one. So I am starting one here.
This thread is about something else.

I would recommend napalm for the whole politics sub forum and have done with it...The rut you are referring to has more to do with the general lack of interest in listening to other peoples point of views and more to do with just pontificating and sermonizing some members very narrow spectrums of belief.

It's become the forum version of talk radio. Not possible to have an intelligent discussion here anymore.
Nice try, Geo, but I fear it won't work.

Boy, this thread is Something Else! Thanks Geo, i'm glad there is something else to talk about.

It's true, and it's reflective of a nation-wide politics thread that has become stuck, mired down in sermonizing & intolerance & plain old spite.
If folks spent half as much energy in offering ideas on what we should do, instead of what we shouldn't do -- or half as many words on what (or who) they're for and not what (or who) they're against -- we'd all be way better off.
We need to remember the ways to converse, discuss & debate .... to solve problems ... and not simply the ways to diss, belittle & hate.

How about an example?

Let's take the War in Afghanistan for an example. How would you begin the conversation? It is an important debate. Nation building? Defense of our homeland? How should the U.S. determine where to send our armed forces?

I have some basic Afghanistan questions. We went in with gusto after 9/11 and then all attention went to Iraq, right? Why didn't we finish the work in Afghanistan, especially since that was the location of the known, real threat of Al Queda? So it seems while we were busy in Iraq, the Taliban and Al Queda had plenty of time to get busy and organize, and now it is looking to be impossible to get the bad guys out.

If we had never invaded Iraq and kept the focus on Afghanistan, would the current situation there be different?
What a mess- I hate to think it might have worked out a bit better.

And now, for something completely different...

Oops- my bad. I thought since Geo was starting a thread about "something else" in the political forum, it should be a new political topic , not lounge material.

Something else? Does that mean anything goes?
Well, this is inspiring.

Didn't come on this thread to rant, but talking about afganistan. How long must the us army have the ****tiest rifle on the planet? It was the worst when I carried it over 40 years ago! It cost lives then, it cost lives now! How come big dollar weapon systems and smart bombs make money for the investor class that wave the flag, but we can't have a rifle that can protect the grunts! We need the M14 back!

This may be going against the grain of this "something else" thread but I, actually, do get something informative out of the political forums, occasionally. I agree there is a great amount of tit-for-tat animosity, but sometimes some very informed posters resist the temptation to retaliate in kind and actually offer good well thought out insights. I learn something from some of you guys. I also learn about what some hot-headed uninformed posters are thinking, and that is educational as well. (And down right entertaining at times.) For better or worse, you get a cross-section of what the "electorate"(term used loosely) is "thinking" (term used loosely). Don't forget, you don't have to get in the gutter with the haters. You can help keep the dialog elevated. And you don't have to step into that forum at all. It might help keep your blood pressure down.

Fantastic new cookbook
So finally I tried one of the recipes from one of my latest cookbook purchases--A Taste of Persia. Probably not new, just new to my collection.
A Taste of Persia: An Introduction ... - Google Books
Anyway, it was pistachio soup. How can one not try something with a name like that!
Ingredients were (don't remember amounts): ground unsalted pistachios, olive oil, leeks, garlic, shallots, rice flour, chicken broth, cumin, red and black pepper, lime juice and Seville orange juice.
You saute chopped onions till translucent, then add crushed garlic and saute till the onions start to brown; stir in flour; add chicken brothl bring to boil; add spices; simmer 45 minutes; add lime and onion juice; serve. Garnish with chopped pistachios.
It was delicious, though of course I couldn't stick to the recipe: added barely cooked pureed spinach to get my veggies in. And I didn't have any Seville oranges for the juice, so I drizzled blood-orange-essence-flavored olive oil as a garnish. Am not one to like mixing sweet tastes with savory dishes (sweet is for candy, dessert, and iced tea in my universe), but just the orange flavor without the sweetness was heavenly!
There are some beautiful rice recipes I want to try too, many colored with saffron.
The other soup I made yesterday for the week was a simple dilled tomato-chicken-vegetable soup. Sauteed onions and peppers in olive oil till they just start to burn a bit, add tomatoes, lots of dill weed and ground seed, chicken broth. Simmer till flavors meld; puree. Add leftovers from a roasted (Twin Oaks Farms) chicken and veggies, chopped into soup-sized bits; simmer 10 minutes; add a cup or two of frozen petit pois and enjoy.
Anybody else here like to cook for the week on Sundays? It's the only way I can manage eating decent meals on work days...

Maybe starting with a read of General McCrystal's Report to the President.

I thought about this earlier today. You are a Genius, too and thanks for remembering Christopher Columbus! What a rough journey. Helps me gain perspective and push through bad days.
I find it a shame that so many businesses are open today......like banks! Isn't this a Federal Holiday?
Even the trash pickup occurred today.......this never happens on a holiday in the City of Atlanta.......neva! Oooops, just the recycling has been picked up - not the regular household trash. Maybe they do take the day off. ;-)Beach Fanatic
