GENEVA - The U.S. began moving naval and air forces closer to Libya and declared on Monday that all options were open, including the use of warplanes to patrol the country's skies, to protect Libyans threatened by an increasingly isolated and defiant Moammar Gadhafi. The U.S. and Europe were freezing billions in Libya's foreign assets.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the United States was exploring the idea of a no-fly zone to prevent Gadhafi's government from bombing its citizens, and European leaders were discussing that as well.

If you really think the powers that be are going to let China get involved then you should have your exhaust system checked.

[ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Congo_War]Second Congo War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame] The largest war in modern African history, it directly involved eight African nations, as well as about 25 armed groups. By 2008 the war and its aftermath had killed 5.4 million people, mostly from disease and starvation,[4] making the Second Congo War the deadliest conflict worldwide since World War II.[5] Millions more were displaced from their homes or sought asylum in neighboring countries.[6]....no oil??? we don't give a ****!

China is already involved - they have more than 30,000 of their people in Libya working on projects and veto power on the UN Security Council.

Libya could face a "protracted civil war" without a strong U.S. response to the turmoil there, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Tuesday as she pressed Congress to fully fund the Obama administration's foreign policy budget.

"The stakes are high," Clinton said in testimony before the House Foreign Affairs Committee. "A strong and strategic American response will be essential," not only in Libya but throughout the Middle East, if the United States is to protect its national security, she said.

..

On the other side of Capitol Hill, a top U.S. military official told the Senate that imposing a no-fly zone over Libya would require first crippling that country's air defenses, including surface to air missiles as well as the Libyan air force.

"No illusions here," said Gen. James N. Mattis of the U.S. Central Command.

U.S. military officials said last night that at least three U.S. warships, including a destroyer already in the Mediterranean and two amphibious assault craft in the Red Sea, were en route to the Suez Canal.

Bob,

I hear ya but if it's all about oil then why are prices so high after Iraq. Show me the oil!

My understanding is Libya is a major source of oil for the EU nations not the US.

If 5.4 million people die in the Congo, does it make a sound in America?

That would be speculation. Look at the price of a barrel of oil over the last week, it's not based on any concrete evidence of a shortened supply, but the threat.

Keep in mind that we are a drive destination and most rentals have a 30 day cancellation policy. That means that if gas hits $5.00/gallon before or on May 1st you can probably just write off this summer as a bust.

ANY SHORTFALL FROM LIBYA CAN EASILY BE MADE UP BY SAUDI ARABIA.

The oil/gas companies are just jerking us around - as usual.

In 2008 when gas spiked didn't we see an increase in vacationer volume?

Former democratic presidential nominee John Kerry now gunning for a no fly zone:

In his opening remarks, committee chairman John Kerry, D-Mass., expressed strong support for a no-fly zone for Libya if events warrant, USA TODAY's Mimi Hall reports.

"We have joined with allies in making clear that Col. Gadhafi must go," Kerry says. "He has lost all legitimacy. We cannot be halfway about that goal. The people of Libya do not ask for or need foreign troops on the ground. They are committed to doing what is necessary, but they do need the tools to prevent the slaughter of innocents on Libyan streets, and I believe the global community cannot be on the sidelines while airplanes are allowed to bomb and strafe."
Kerry said a no-fly zone "is not a long-term proposition, and we should be ready to implement it as necessary."

Senator Lindsey Graham tonight on a CNN interview strongly urged President Obama to threaten Libya with military force if he continues to bomb Libyan insurgents.

Everyone in Washington D.C. has lost their freaking minds.

This may come down entirely on Obama. If so, it'll be his first real foreign policy test. I hope he's thinking more clearly than his political compatriots.
