Last night, after a grayt night moon watching with wonderful friends, we got a very sad phone call...my brother in law called to let us know that his 2 month old baby girl was in intensive care. About 30 min. later, he called again, she had just died. They don't know what happened, at this point, they just know that her heart just stopped. She had a twin sister that seems to be fine, but are checking her out also. It is really a heartbreaking situation. About 4 years ago, my other BIL lost his 3 month old son to sids. As you can imagine, my MIL is falling apart.
Now here is the delima, how do you get the best prices on a plane flight? I've never been on a comercial airplane and am in totally unfamiliar territory on getting my husband there. They are in Portland, ME. Are there better days to fly? Better times than others?? We don't know when the funeral will be so we haven't booked anything yet. Any tips any frequent flyers might have would be graytly appreciated...along with lots of your prayers.

oh beachmom...i am so sad to hear this news. please know that you and your family are in my prayers.
needs to get out more
sorry to hear about tis devestating news. my thoughs are with your family.
re flights. most airlines have a bereavement rate(discount), check with them to see what paprwork they need. i always travel as early as possible(6am) so as to be able to get where i'm going while it's still daylight, and if there are delays, overnights in the airports a minimal, since they have a good amount of time to right things. rates will be cheaper if he can stay through the weekend.

Beachmom, I am so sorry to hear this sad, sad news.
I once used Frontier to go to a funeral, but their "bereavement" fare was over $700! They said it was a deal because of the flexibility. I dunno.
In regards to flights, go to ITA Software
Click on Looking For Flights. Log in as a Guest.
From there, type in your needs. ITA will show you the best fares from all airlines. Once you find something you like, go directly to the airline to book.
You can also use: Booking Buddy as a comparison tool. Good luck.

I am so sorry. Your family will be in our prayers. We lost several babies -- it was so tough. I have never gotten over it. Thank God I was able to have one successful pregnancy, even though I was hospitalized for two months to deliver a healthy baby.

Wow. Hugs to everyone in your family. We never know when we may lose the ones who we hold most precious to our heart, so remember to live each day at its fullest because each moment truly is special. Hug and kiss those children, mothers, brothers, sisters, daddies, grandparents, friends, and tell them that you love them every chance you get.
Regarding the flights, I don't fly enough to be able to give you any advice, other than I have heard of some airlines offering major discounts to family members of people who have suffered a death. You might ask.

Sorry to hear this news Beachmom
If you call and ask about a bereavement fare, the airline might ask what funeral home is handling the arrangemements so they can verify the story (for obvious reasons). It may help to have the funeral home name and phone number handy. Let me know if I can answer any questions you might have as information becomes available.

Beachmom, so sorry to hear this.
I just checked airtran's web site because I recalled them saying something about Portland, but service there isn't starting till July.
If you look on the sites suggested, you'll see prices, and then once I had to fly out immediately, and called the airline directly and asked for a bereavement rate. I found one that was greatly reduced compared to others.
The best times to fly are Tuesdays-Thursday as far as rates are concerned.
You and Mr. Beachmom's family are in our prayers.
I just saw Skunky's post and yes, the airlines ask for that info when they give a bereavement rate.

I'm so sorry to hear this Beach Mom. I cannot even imagine what you're all going through now, especially the baby's parents.
As for flights, the bereavement fares are better than full fares, but they still can be high. You could try travelocity.com and expedia.com as well.
Your husband could also fly into Boston and drive two hours to Portland, Maine, if you can get a less expensive fare. He'd have to rent a car, so you'd have to see if that would save enough $. And, of course, flying right into Portland would be easier.
Again I'm so sorry for your family's loss of the baby. So very sad.

Beachmom, my sincerest condolences. God bless your husband for being there when his family needs him.
You'll need to spend some time on the computer to get the best fares. You can start by googling "cheap airfares" and that will bring up several sites such as kayak, priceline, travelocity, expedia, and more. For whatever reason, air fares change prices on Tuesdays for the best sales, so keep checking from now until then, if you possibly can. (I know you may have time constraints.) Have lots of paper handy for making all your notes as you go. My sister lives in Bangor and she's found that booking flights into and out of Boston helps, though it involves driving for several hours, so you'd have to weigh the price of a rental car against any airline savings. Same thing with flying out of Birmingham or Atlanta--you may get cheaper fares out of hub cities but again it might not be worth your while. The best thing is to just sit down and plug away at it until you get a handle on what's a reasonable air fare and what's not. Good luck and again, my condolences during this sad time.

I AM SO SORRY for your families lost.
How sad.
I will be sending all the ((((GOOD VIBES))))) that I can to your family.....As far as fares, it seems you got some good advice. Ft. Walton airport is usually cheaper than PCB for some reason. you could always check into flying out of Tallahassee or Pensacola to save some $$.....let me know if you need anything....

So sorry for your loss. Not enough words for your situtation. Skunkape had a good idea with having funeral home number handy. When I have had to fly in emergency situations, they did call and comfirm. Some airlines have special fares for cases like this. You can call the carrier and speak to resevations, and they can give you prices.
Since 9-11 the security has gotten tighter. If you book a flight less than 6 hours before departure ( as I had to do when my daughter was sick),expect a full security check. They went through everything I had including each peice of paper in my wallet. It took about 30 min., so allow time in case that happens.
Good thought to you and your family.

Thanks everyone, I knew you would be a wealth of knowledge.
Unfortunatly, I never got to see either of the babies, not even a picture, so it's a little unreal to me. Thanks most of all for your prayers, they will need them. I cannot even begin to imagine that kind of loss.

Actually if you book a flight the day of departure, they do the full check. That's why Mr. BR, Beach Jacket, and her BF were late when we had dinner with Miss Kitty et al. at D&K's in late December. They wouldn't allow BF to check in at the kiosk, so he had to wait in line forever at the ticket counter. As a result, he missed his flight and had to wait on the next one. They wouldn't allow him to bring his bag on board, and they checked every item in it. They threw out his new Carolina Herrera cologne even though the bag was to be checked.
