Very sad end to a grayt night...

Last night, after a grayt night moon watching with wonderful friends, we got a very sad phone call...my brother in law called to let us know that his 2 month old baby girl was in intensive care. About 30 min. later, he called again, she had just died. They don't know what happened, at this point, they just know that her heart just stopped. She had a twin sister that seems to be fine, but are checking her out also. It is really a heartbreaking situation. About 4 years ago, my other BIL lost his 3 month old son to sids. As you can imagine, my MIL is falling apart.

Now here is the delima, how do you get the best prices on a plane flight? I've never been on a comercial airplane and am in totally unfamiliar territory on getting my husband there. They are in Portland, ME. Are there better days to fly? Better times than others?? We don't know when the funeral will be so we haven't booked anything yet. Any tips any frequent flyers might have would be graytly appreciated...along with lots of your prayers.

What I did to find the cheapest tickets to AZ was to use those systems like PriceLine and Travelocity and then going to every individual airline that came up's site and searching that way.

Oh, Beachmom, this is so sad! Please let Mr BM know that our hearts are with you all. please let us know what we can do for you.

Same here! I am so sorry y'all are going through this! You're all in our thoughts and prayers!

...
As for flights, the bereavement fares are better than full fares, but they still can be high. You could try travelocity.com and expedia.com as well.

Your husband could also fly into Boston and drive two hours to Portland, Maine, if you can get a less expensive fare. He'd have to rent a car, so you'd have to see if that would save enough $. And, of course, flying right into Portland would be easier.

Again I'm so sorry for your family's loss of the baby. So very sad.

Good idea. Big city to big city is your best bet, especially on short notice. Yes, rates are going to be high, but non bereavement on short notice is even higher. Be prepared to produce proof.

I am so sorry Beachmom! If you want tell Mr. Beachmom he can drive up to Birmingham, stay with us and see if he can get better flights from here. Birmingham is an International airport and you can fly to most any city from here.

Let me know if there is anything we can do. Y'all will be in my thougths and prayers.
Take her up on this! We're all here for you!

BookingBuddy actually does that for you; it checks about 10 sites in total.
I did use Priceline for another funeral once, and as it was Denver to Chicago it worked out fine.
I think the method I posted at the top, ITA and Booking Buddy, is the most thorough and fastest.
I was never asked to show any 'proof' for my bereavement, but I didn't think I was getting that good of a deal to begin with.

I'm so sorry for your family; a death is always a tragic event but when it's a child, the pain is unbearable. The parents must be devestated. They definitely need family surrounding them to help them at this time.

You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Thanks for all of the help from everyone- Cil, your websites were A LOT of help! Thank you- never would have known about that otherwise. I ended up finding the flight we wanted through Cil's website and then shopped it on the others. Considering that the first prices I was getting were $1250+, it's still WAY too much, but it's ok.

As for BIL, they are so busy making sure that the other twin (Emma) is ok, I think this will be a very long process. I can only hope that they have the support system and  that I have here.

Thanks everyone-
Al

BTW- the little angel that was lost was Bella:wub: and we still don't know why.....:idontno: and maybe never will.....

It just breaks my heart to read this. I hope your brother-in-law and his family are surrounded with family and friends and love to help them endure through this tragedy. God bless Bella - what a beautiful name (quite literally.)

Your family is in our prayers and a special prayer for little Bella and her sister Emma!

I lost a daughter when she was 2 years old - the pain is unbelievable. There are support groups when they are ready. Compassionate Friends is a national organization that has groups all over the country. You can try their website compassionatefriends.org to see if there is one in Maine.
