Walton School Calendar Changes - Summer 3 weeks shorter

Walton County, Fla:
Some businesses in Walton County might be shorthanded this summer. The Walton District School Board voted last night to send children to school earlier.

D?j? Vu is one of the many shops in seaside that rely on student workers, particularly during the busy summer months ??we have girls that come from lots of different places that work during the summertime. and we also have girls that come and work during the fall that are in high school.?

Christina Hill is the manager of D?j? Vu in both Seaside and Pier Park. She says that employee schedules are difficult to coordinate.

And with the decision made Tuesday night by the school board, businesses like D?j? Vu might have to do some rearranging ??I think it will definitely affect the girls that work during the summer. You know we need as many girls as possible in the summer. It gets kind of crazy and busy and we need all the help we can get and young high schoolers are great in the store?so them not being able to work as many hours will affect??

The Walton District School Board has decided to shift the school calendar so school will start and end sooner. The first day will be August 12th. Like last year, Thanksgiving holidays will be 3 days. School will finish up on May 26th. The big change this year is that summer vacation will be about 3 weeks shorter.

Superintendent Carlene Anderson says ??what that means is that we can get more time in before we break for Christmas holidays and that?s important to us because finishing our first semester before Christmas is important for our students.?

Superintendent Anderson says the decision to change the calendar came from the calendar committee, and that it?s in the best interest of students? education ??as educators that are on that committee as well as support staff?it?s important to them as well as to me that we provide our calendar first?what?s academically best for students and second what?s best for parents.?

Superintendent Anderson promises that while this year?s summer vacation might be shorter, next year?s vacation will be longer ??it?ll all average out. They?re not going to be real happy ...as will some of our employees because it?s not going to be easy to come back and not have a full break, but it?ll be ok??

Christmas vacation will be the same length with the change.

Will suck this summer, but hopefully a step in the right direction back to having kids available to work, and families beginning to enjoy summer, on Memorial Day.

Have they posted graduation dates for 2011 yet? I don't know whether to smile, cry, or do what.

I think this schedule works great for an area that relies on tourism dollars and needs seasonal employees- so many of these kids want and need to work, but not being able to start until after Memorial Day makes it hard for them. I don't think we will ever again see the day where we start after Labor Day and get out before Memorial Day, so personally, I would rather get out before Memorial Day- going to school in June is awful and interferes with sports, vacations, jobs, camp, but by mid-August, those summer activities are either over or winding down and aren't affected to the degree they are in June.

It will only be this summer that is "short" because of ending on the current calendar system of school lasting past Memorial Day but starting on the new 2011 calendar- summer 2011 will be "normal".

Having the entire week off for Thanksgiving was a bit ridiculous- we were stunned when we moved here as this seemed so odd when we broke for Christmas 3 weeks later. Also the 2 days added to spring break- still don't get that one- hope they take these days off the 2011 calendar!

I agree with you jdarg. the schedule improves in the long run. school should never go into June, imo. Kids are just fried by Memorial Day. Time for summer.

We have only known a week long Thanksgiving break - its like a spring break only in the fall. very good time to travel and see family. whereas our spring break is used to travel to see whatever we want to see - as a family. Some years these are the only weeks we have for travel. Summer time is just so busy here.

Someone said we might print the schedule next week for parents as well as having an article on the actual meeting itself by Reid Tucker.

It is challenging for those in the resort industry. We are still in season the second week of August. That week before school started was our only week to take a family vacation with all of us being able to go.

When I was in school (back in the stone ages), we started the day after Labor Day and didn't get out until mid or late June. We had off for the Jewish holidays (Rosh Hashana (sp?) and Yom Kippur), a week in the fall, Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving and Black Friday, and the week between Christmas and New Year. We also had off Lincoln & Washington's Birthdays (before it became just President's Day), Easter week for our spring break and Memorial Day.

But, like I said, that was in the stone age. And it was in the North, so we also had to allow for snow days.

I wanted to post a few thoughts on the calendar. I was on the calendar committee this year. Was not on the calendar committee last year. I felt pretty strongly that getting out of school in the middle of June was not a good idea. But, even more importantly, I really did not like that the first semester this school year ended after the Christmas break. And, I heard from a number of school teachers and such that ending the first semester after the Christmas break was not a good educational practice. In order to end the first semester before the Christmas break, we had to back up the start of school to early to mid August. That did make for a short summer this summer, but, it does even out next school year (2011-2012). Also, we needed the two days during the Thanksgiving week to get in enough days to make a semster before Christmas. That was the thinking that went into this calendar for 2010-2011.

Cobb county (near Atlanta) kids go back to school Aug 3. there was a lot of debate over it. but I like it. We get a week in september, November, February and April. 2 for Christmas. But the big thing was ending the first semester before Christmas!
