Just wondering how the water has been recently. I saw a pic on a realty site and it looked like the water was full of June grass.

Some people on Facebook were saying it was algae and mentioned Destin's beach being covered up with it. This was about a week or a week and a half ago. I mentioned it looked more like June Grass to me.

We just left on the fourth. It was June Grass then and mighty thick. We kayaked out to the second sand bar with the kids and had a great time.... nice and clear. Here's a pic from out front of Watercolor/Grayton Beach State Park. Haven't figured out how to make the image bigger..... sorry! Honestly, we were just thankful there were no signs of oil.

Why does the June grass seem to be so bad this year and what will it take for it to clear out?

It usually has been blown out by now by a storm or two. It has been relatively quiet in the gulf here for the past few months. I think this also means near-shore waters are warmer than normal also.

Thanks. We're looking forward to it...June grass or not.

I hear you. I can get around that if it is just on the sand as it is in this picture. Something is brewing in the south Gulf now that could turn tropical, it would be nice if it would do enough weather wise to wash it away from the beach. Our trip is still 2 1/2 weeks away so hopefully it will be gone by then.

Until the oil disaster, we are bummed when our days in the gulf are limited, but now we realize since we do love to vacation on 30A there is more to do. My husband teaches so we can't come down when the water might be better.
I think it is interesting (karma) that since the oil disaster, first, the oil rig was closer to LA, the storms have taken the oil toward LA, and the winds have been from the NE mostly. And LA is the state that is so eager to get back to drilling.
Anyway, we have to appreciate the gulf even more now and realize that it is changing always despite the oil mess. We've never been there for red tide so can't imagine. Have been there for waves that are too rough and you get tired of that unless you are a surfer. Have been there when there are rip currents and you could only walk around the edge. And June grass. We've been lucky all these years - hardly any rain unless it's the infamous late afternoon shower - by that time we should be in off the beach to clean up for dinner🙂
Ideally, I would love to go out in the water and stand there and 'bob' all day for 7 days but that has happened to me once and that was in Cancun (north side). Otherwise I am more than happy to sit in our lovely sand chairs with our feet in the water staring at the beautiful changing colors of the water and the sky.
If the sun get too hot, we retreat to the safety of an umbrella.
Sorry, we've got 4 1/2 months until our next vacation. Ellen

We went to Grayton late yesterday and the grass has practically disappeared, the water was beautiful, but big waves due to the storms.

Check the EPA/BP spill site still plenty of VOC's in the water. Just shower quickly. I'm disgusted by everything Gov't. Local, State and Fed can all just kiss me where I occassionally let the sun shine.
