WCTA Commissioner Report Card and 1st 2010 Porker Award
On Thursday, July 15th the Board of County Commissioner voted to raise the tax rate to the "rollback" rate as defined by Florida Statute. That set the initial rate in excess of the required rate.
Commissioners Brannon, Pridgen, Cecilia Jones and Larry Jones raised the initial millage rate by 2.74 million dollars greater than the budget they approved required in order to have a balanced budget.
The raise in the initial millage rate is the largest increase in the proposed tax rate in Walton County recent history.
Only one commissioner voted against this 22 % Increase in the BCC tax rate - Sara Comander!
We feel that the 4 people's insistence in collecting more than they need during these times need to receive a Grade for their seeming lack of understanding of the impact on the local taxpayer and economy.
We award these 4 our "Porker Award" for July 2010

Would someone care to explain this?

I will gladly handle the question.
All employees of the South Walton Mosquito Control District receive the same benefits. Commissioners receive no special benefits that are only applicable to them. Same package for everyone. No special benefits for commissioners.
If Seagull is aware that I do receive a portion of my family coverage from taxpayer dollars they should also know that I neither voted to add that benefit or was it added during my tenure as a SCWMCD Commissioner. That benefit was added for all employees over 10 years ago in a public forum during a noticed public budget meeting. The SWCMCD medical plan is a part of the Walton County BCC medical package where taxpayers are also paying a portion of employee's family coverage, something I have spoken against on multiple occasions.
Seagull should also be aware that for the past two years I have voted to remove the benefit during the budget process and that each time two other commissioners have voted to keep the same benefits package for all.
The first public hearing on the 2010-2011 budget hearing will be held on September 3rd at 5:05 pm. I invite you to come and express your objection to the benefit.
I will once again vote against the proposed budget due to the proposed millage rate increase and it's benefits package.
Note : I serve as a member of the SWCMCD board - fulfilling the unexpired term of the previous commissioner in Seat 3. I am a candidate for election during the November 2 General election and have two candidates that are running for the position as well.
I gladly run on my accomplishments and record of service to the district.

Thank you for the prompt response. After reading both posts sounds like the Seat 3 race is heating up. Politricks, gotta love it.

Bob,
I am less concerned about you having insurance as long as the same benefit is given to all the employees equally. These folks who want those we elect to work for free should run for office and give the benefit back, but until then keep on collecting.

Is the cost to the employee for family coverage different for Mosquito Control employees than it is for the rest of the employees of the county and the constitutional officers?
If not, what is the complaint?
We are talking about the same BCBS insurance that, while costing a county employee $400 monthly, has a $1500/$4500 deductible, and that's if you got the one that provided prescription drug coverage, correct?

Seagull, I note you have four (4) posts so far and while I am well aware the number of posts one has means nothing, I am also well aware that government employees, in many cases, get the short end of the stick when it comes to salaries and benefits. In many cases, if they live long enough, they come out being in a very good position upon retirement. Such is my case. I will not deny any county employee a benefit as long as it is within reason. 99% of them do a great job. In that vein, part payment for one's health insurance falls well within in the purview of a county employee's compensation.

Generally, Sarah Commander tends to be against county spending, but I wonder if she voted against it because she knew it would pass anyway, and it would help her look better for re-election.
I sure hope everyone remembers to vote for her as she campaigns against Ro Cuchens.

Why do you support someone who you consider to be at best disingenious and at worst dishonest? What about Mr. Kramer?

I think most every politician who is trying to get elected will consider things from a voter's perspective. Whether or not that sways their vote is up to them. I'm not sure that even a moral and ethical person can really park their reelection totally at the curb when making a decision that will not matter anyway. Her vote essentially meant nothing with four out of five voting for it.
Why would I support her? Good question. Isn't she running against Ro Cuchens? Out of all the commissioners, I think Sarah has been the one most on the side of the people of Walton County, and that is a great reason to support her. She is running against Ro Cuchens who has acted in a less than professional manner in my opinion, such as the time he, acting independently on his customers behalf, mailed letters using his County Commissioner letterhead to the DEP to request permits for seawalls (reported in the Walton Sun). That just gives more reason to vote for Sarah. I don't think I've stated that she is dishonest or disingenuous and if I have, hopefully, this post will clear that up.
As for Kramer, I won't even comment on him.

For any inclined to be critical of Bob Hudson or to believe those throwing rocks at him with reference to his receiving health insurance as a Mosquito Control board member, you would be well served were all county employees, nay, all county voters, as honest, forthright, and hardworking as Bob Hudson. In all likelihood, he does more in a month for Walton County than most do in a lifetime. Bob fully understands there are problems with government taxing and spending, and he is working from within and from without to mitigate those problems. Ask yourself what you have done lately for your fellow citizens. Bob asks and answers that every day.
