It’s really not that hard. Lots of syndromes, but everyone is a male or female and there is an argument for a unisex designation. People after all are born with no or both sex organs.I read your question as about gender.

I'm not a biologist. A person can have the most common sex chromosome combinations of XX or XY [edit previously mistakenly said YY] . There are those with the less common combinations of XXY and XYY. I don't know the answer for sure, but I would have to guess that the answer is not 2 based on these unusual cases alone. If gender is rigidly defined by reproductive roles, the answer might seem to be 2, but is it really? I think we all know of people whose appearance and demeanor seem to conflict with their traditionally accepted gender assignment. If you don't believe this, look no further than Lindsey Graham.
I thought the duplication of chromosomes was the cause of downs syndrome a.k.a. chromosome 21 disorder. It just goes to show you, you learn something new every day. Thanks!

Thanks!Nope, you can have duplication of the sex chromosomes. There are even women who are XXX, and I' m not talking about Donald Trump's whorefriends.

So, what I am seeing posted here is that there are exactly 2 sexes, not counting gentic disorders. Thank you for the clarification.

Please validate you point in regards to Newtonian mechanics.

Please validate you point in regards to Newtonian mechanics.I'm just making an analogy. I assume that in this day and age, pretty much everyone knows that Newtonian mechanics falls apart when you approach the speed of light. So in other words when Einstein took a closer look at commonly accepted wisdom (Newton's laws), he was able to find a point where it breaks down (high speed). The analogy I'm making is that it looks like it might be the same with gender when scientists take a deeper look at human physiology. The notion of two definite genders looks like it might have broken down. It seems that hormones and receptivity to hormones plays a huge role in gender identity, and that sex chromosomes are just one determinant of hormone levels. There are plenty of articles on this subject. Don't take my word for it. I also assume that in this day and age everyone has the ability to do their own research. I just did a search on "number of genders science" and came up with a number of articles.

For the recorrd, I'm not implying that people cannot be attracted to the same or both sexes (or variations) and I don't care. But, there are only 2 sexes. Male and female (extremely rare anomalies excluded). Why would hormone therapy be needed if there is a predisposition? You want to bring in an analogy that at the speed of light (or greater), physics warps. Thats not analogous. Unless you have some really fast transgenders. Well, I guess we do. When a male identifies as a female and competes in track for instance. Trophies have been won and records have been decimated. after all.

The analogy was about using scientific methods taking a closer look at reality and breaking down old paradigms. I've always said that conservatives are cognitively challenged when it comes to either making or interpreting analogies. Actually this all started when I originally said that conservatives were cognitively challenged when it comes to science. Thank you for proving my both of my points.
