Hi, we are planning a trip to SoWal in the next 2 weeks or so. This will be our first trip to SoWal, we usually stay in Destin. We are looking forward to the less crowded, less touristy aspects of the SoWal beaches.
One of the condos which we are considering is located very close to Eastern Lake, and we were curious what if any effect the lake has upon the color and quality of the gulf water. Is the lake currently broken out of its banks? or is it expected to be anytime soon? Does the flow of the water from the lakes effect the surrounding beach and water, either negatively or positively?
Is there anything else we should be aware of?
Thanks in advance for your replies, and we can't wait to enjoy your beautiful beaches.

near were the dune lakes flow into the ocean the water is darker and not clear. The dune lake water flowing into the gulf almost looks like sewer brown water.from what i've seen the water is only affected for maybe 10 -20 yards surrounding were the water flows out. whats been disappointing so far this year is the i've seen very few days were the gulf has been real clear as the rain has wrecked havoc on the clearness of the water.

It is not toxic in any way, though. It is just tannins from plant decay and doesn't harm anything. It usually dissipates in just a few days.
If it rains a lot, it will usually break through to some degree. All in all, SoWal still kicks Destin's back side for beauty with less tourist population.

Eastern Lake broke out last Sunday. Any of the brown water will most likely be dissipated by now. There could be just the normal bits of seaweed or it could be crystal clear. Mother nature changes the scenario daily.

Open lakes are fascinating and a ton of fun. People, especially kids, are drawn to the outflows. You will also see more fish, crabs, and birds there. If the lake is open consider yourself lucky.

Brown water? Harmless. Do you drink tea? Same thing makes it brown...

I fish near the eastern lake outflow regularly. I like when it is open because it seems to attract bluefish.
