America's most dangerous city

Key stat: 2,405.5 incidents per 100,000 residents

St. Louis nosed out its World Series rival, Detroit, for the dubious distinction of having the highest rate of violent crime for any city in the United States. The level of crime there was more than 40 times that of the nation's safest city, Brick Township, New Jersey.

When my husband asked me to marry him, I took a map, drew a 200 mile radius around ATL, I said that if we didn't live in that circle, I didn't want to marry him. The exception was NOLA, which is now so effed up that I'm glad we didn't make that choice. We're about 50 miles from the ATL airport, so I'd say he kept his promise.

St. Louis -- no way -- too far from any coast. Landlocked.

BR - that's funny. kurt drew a 200 mile radius around Bham and said if we lived anywhere inside of that circle, he wouldn't marry me... (my hometown). fortunately, I was in full agreement...

When Merman asked me to marry him, I handed him a calendar and drew a 20" radius around the summer months and said if he couldn't marry within that circle, I couldn't do it.

He picked the outer perimeter.

As is so typical of these lists, the safest cities are whitebread nighmares.

Do you want to import whitetrash like me to spice it up? Seriously, if we do come here I want to get a condo in NOLA so I can periodically go back and enjoy the pleasant decay (a humid entropy as they say) that city offers.

Not me--I'm 15 minutes from downtown and can see the Arch from certain points in my neighborhood, but I'd move downtown in a heartbeat.

BR, what are you talking about? St. Louis is a coastal city--located directly on the Mississippi River coast!

I am originally from Baltimore. we always had the honor of being in the top 10 or so. You couldn't swing a dead cat without a murder happening every 10 minutes.

I'm pretty sure that's not a PETA-sanctioned activity.
