Fraternity pledges' chant raises concerns at Yale - CNN.com

In a statement by the board of directors of Delta Kappa Epsilon, the international fraternity says it strongly condemns the actions of the Yale chapter and acknowledges that the sentiments expressed were, indeed, offensive.

This is beyond offensive and needs more than an oops they were offensive statement.

Keep in mind that the stunt was done in front of the Universities women's center. This was not a frat stunt done in private. Quite frankly it's akin to WBBC at military funerals.

Considering the frequency and severity of date rape on university campuses, one would hope an appropriate reaction is forthcoming.

1 in 5 women will be assaulted in college.

Ah those Yalies.

Funny, 3 of our last 4 Presidents (Bush Sr. Clinton, Bush Jr.) attended Yale. I'm surprised that, given the way the media beggars attention, that tie in wasn't highlighted in the story somehow.

I'm sure it's more than 20% in the Greek system. At one university with which I'm familiar, if a sorority sister is raped by a frat boy, she is told by her sorority not to report it because it will get the fraternity in trouble. The sorority sisters threaten to vote out the victim and make her life hell.

Sadly, I am sure you are correct. It is very under-reported and there are a lot of cover-ups.

My college has on its rulebooks that sex is grounds for expulsion, just so when some jackhole tries the "I had sex w/ her, but didn't rape her" defense they can still technically expel him. ;-) And since the University is its own little fiefdom, they also figured out a way to punish them through both the school and the regular law w/o any double jeopardy issues.

The administration and the campus police were in complete agreement about the severity of the issue and weren't afraid to take a stand (rare in academia), but incidents still happened far too frequently and didn't get reported.

Mama Scooterbug worked in the Psychology Department at a big University and had some truly horrific cases. Nothing like a frantic call at 3am asking if you have pepper spray because some girl was raped and left for dead in a dumpster to make personal safety lessons hit home. :(
