Elton John has never been a big fan of religion.
?Religion promotes hatred and spite against gays," the openly gay performer told the Observer's Music Monthly magazine in 2006. ?From my point of view, I would ban religion completely."
So it comes as a surprise that in Parade magazine this week, John claims that one of the central figures of Christianity is in fact a homosexual.
"I think Jesus was a compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems," he tells Parade. "On the cross, he forgave the people who crucified him."
In the same breath, John renounces celebrity. The man who at the Grammys wore soot on his face and performed opposite the ultimate exhibitionist, Lady Gaga, says he is done with fame.
"Fame attracts lunatics," he tells the magazine. "I never had a bodyguard, ever, until Gianni [Versace] died. I don't like celebrity anymore."
John made headlines at the beginning of the year when it was announced he staged an intervention to help designer Donatella Versace kick her drug habit. Prior to that he had revealed he was also supporting rapper Eminem in his fight against substance abuse.

Very true. Whether it is ignorant, stupid, thoughtful, resourceful or just plain dumb or extremely brilliant. We certainly get all of these on the SoWal board and that is what is great about it and America. SSB, you are spot on!

I love Elton John. Yellow Brick Road was my very first album. and I've loved him since. Rocket Man is my favorite song...

I'm pretty sure Elton is smart enough to know that no one really knows about Jesus' sexual preference. He could be making a statement that Jesus is everyman: straight, gay, good, bad, drug addict, homeless, poor, saint, idiot, etc... . This is what gets lost in religion, imo. People are taught about Jesus but somehow they lose his entire message . Elton John is completely correct in his statement .. this is a more complete version of his interview. his words tell me that he is only trying to make a statement about Jesus, society and how we misuse religion. Unfortunately, his point will be missed too, and the words "Elton said Jesus was a homo" will be all we hear from the general public.

The singer also told Parade Jesus was "compassionate", forgiving and "understood human problems".
A spokesman for the Church of England said: "Sir Elton's reflection that Jesus calls us all to love and forgive is one shared by all Christians."
"But insights into aspects of the historic person of Jesus are perhaps best left to the academics," he added.
Sir Elton said in the interview: "On the cross, he forgave the people who crucified him. Jesus wanted us to be loving and forgiving.
"I don't know what makes people so cruel. Try being a gay woman in the Middle East - you're as good as dead," he added.

I think its too late for Sir Elton to reject fame.

and I'm glad - he is a compassionate human being who uses his fame and resources to help and inspire others. I am thankful for his incredible music and his work in the world.
