This efficient sandal is made with recycled EVA rubber, and amazingly, requires no glue or adhesives to bond its layers of material together. It was created by LifeStyleDesign and commissioned by Reef in an attempt to eliminate the pollution caused by non-recyclable EVA scrap incineration. One shoe factory can easily generate a massive 8? high 20? x 20? mound of scrap EVA every day.
The soles of the Eco Sandal are made from reground EVA rubber remnants from the die cutting process and the chassis is made from thick cut natural leather that will last forever (with the proper care) and improve with age.
Sandals typically go through a very linear lifecycle. A leather sandal with an EVA mid and outsole is purchased and in six months to a year, just as the leather is starting to look wonderfully worn, the EVA sole has completely worn away, and the entire sandal must be discarded and new ones purchased.
By using recycled EVA, this design initiates a closed loop system with potentially no waste. The Eco Sandal introduces a technological advancement that meets the increasing demand for environmental consciousness while maintaining the popular Reef image.
