And not just any dunes, these are the dunes dreams are made of. Dunes as far as the eye can see, right up to the emerald waters of the Gulf Of Mexico. In decades past, summer kids would play in these dunes (now forbidden), creating forts in the hollows where imagined pirates hid their treasure.

Dune Watch is a magical home that sleeps up to 12 and has 5 bedrooms, 4.5 baths, parking for 6 cars, and a short beach walk, close to downtown Grayton favorites The Red Bar, Chiringo’s and The Zoo Gallery. Dune Watch was built in 1984. It was a Jim Walter home that my parents built in New Grayton when they developed “New Grayton” or “New Town” in the late 70’s/early 80’s with Jimmy Ray and Jim Taylor. The ordinance put in place for new Grayton was for single story homes on stilts. But unfortunately, the ordinance was violated almost immediately when someone erected a 2-story house on stilts almost overnight.

Back then, no one cared much about how the houses looked or how they were furnished. It was all about the beach and the community, that used to be mainly repeat renters and a handful of full-time residents and folks with second homes. There was no telephone for a handful of years at Dune Watch or any house in Grayton until later in the 80’s.

Sometime in the 90’s, developers tried to swap their land at Topsail Hill on Hwy. 98 for Grayton Dunes preserve State Park (don’t know official name) to the west of Grayton across from Pine Street as if that would be an equal trade! My parents, Bonnie and Arnie Covell, and droves of Grayton homeowners packed the County commissioners meeting to protest, and thankfully they stopped it from happening. We didn’t realize that someone could attempt to do that. It pays to stay vigilant!

Dune Watch was fully renovated by Maurice Sweet and his wife Monica and their team at Tier 1 Custom Home Builders. The renovation included new siding, new impact windows, a new kitchen, a new deck on the porch, and tongue and groove on the inside walls throughout. All the flat bedroom ceilings were raised up to follow the roofline, and the bathrooms were remodeled. Most important, they retrofitted the original house with metal rods that anchor the roof to the pilings and added new hurricane clips.

Tier 1 also added an addition of 2 bedrooms/baths and a half bath, a laundry area, and a small deck to the back of the house. An outside shower was also added under the house along with guest and owner storage. The whole project was completed in 7 months as promised.
