(WMBB) — Walton county deputies said golf carts are increasingly becoming a major safety issue.
They’re pushing for a tougher county ordinance to prevent potential accidents.
Golf carts are only allowed on roadways where the speed limit is 35 miles an hour, or less.
But deputies said they’re always pulling over golf carts driving illegally on busy roadways, like Highway 98.
Earlier this month, deputies told commissioners about the safety-sensitive issue.
Sheriff Michael Adkinson said with 4.5 million annual visitors, it’s difficult to get a handle on the issue.
“At the end of the day what they are trying to say is a new group of tourists come every week here so it’s difficult to educate somebody and then a week later you have a new group coming in. So they are looking at a lot of new ways to strengthen the ordinance,” Adkinson said.
Right now deputies are limited to educating visitors and locals with signs and stickers.
Some are suggesting deputies be allowed to impound golf carts from violators.
That puts more responsibility on the vehicle’s owner.
“It puts that blame shared with the people maybe that are not passing the information on the way they should. I think it is a creative way of looking at doing it. We are certainly going to work with the board and we would like to see this problem, I don’t know if we will ever resolve it, but certainly mitigate down some,” Adkinson said.
But before the county takes that type of drastic action, Adkinson wants commissioners to ask for the public’s help.
“You don’t just go and immediately change the ordinance and start enforcing it without doing due diligence to make sure the public is aware that they have an input and that they get an opportunity to be heard,” Adkinson said.
Adkinson said deputies have pulled over around 400 golf carts within a few weeks.
They’ve also seen a number of people suffer serious injuries in golf cart accidents.
Walton County commissioners are hoping to schedule a workshop meeting on the issue.

In what way failed a dozen times? Please give more info
Trolley service both free and paid has been tried since the early nineties. Literally ever effort has failed due to lack of interest. I was a consultant to two efforts. Basically our general clientele views it as public transportation which has a negative connotation to begin with. No matter how you dress it up people would rather use their own transportation methods which is why bikes and golf carts reign supreme.
To be fair the last effort was spear headed just before the pandemic, but it received a very weak welcome for the month it ran.
Things really started changing on the west end of 30a when the big rental companies emerged and began providing golf carts as part of the rentals, and the speed limits were decreased to 35. If we were to somehow make the rental companies share the responsibility and liability for their clients using golf carts, that would be a start. But I don't ever see that happening. I also don't see the county raising speed limits. Our hands are tied with regard to state laws. I'm afraid we're stuck with the unsafe golf carts on 30a and our law enforcement will have to beat the burden of enforcing the laws, and our emergency management will bear the burden of the injuries that will inevitably happen.Put speed limits at 40 for 100 feet between towns. Keep them off the main roads.
Golf carts on main roads with cars, trucks and big rigs. Where else in America is this stupid?

A fleet of maybe 20 small SUV's, possibly based at the parking lot north of Grayton, would be a thing visitors would use much more than a trolley.

1. Do you mean minimums? Need to change state law.
2. Already mandatory and ticketable if not using.
3. Just added last year.
4. Who would enforce this?
5. Already are.
1. Most can't go over 20-22... if that.
2. Has to be enforced better.
3. Better signage. It can be improved.
4. They need to self-govern... if not, they stand to lose business.

Just to clarify you mean the big truck shuttles? Hate to break it to you, but those are completely government run.

The Sheriff has cracked down on that. Plenty of child endangerment arrests over spring break and summer.

I think the future is small, autonomous, electric trolleys that are being tested in many places now. They won't be quick though so tourists will probably want to keep using their cars and golf carts. There will need to be incentives to use alternative transportation.

BUT, I can not picture an autonomous driving system being able to sense the myriad of driving obstacles on our roadways (Hikers, bikers, speedos, cars, trucks, golf carts, one wheelers, 18 wheelers...) It frazzles my vision to try to watch for every damn fool out there.

And how about parents holding an infant on their lap while driving....stupid stupid stupid.I generally don’t mind golf carts, but that view is changing.
I live in Miramar Beach and Scenic 98 isn’t the primary road for most people over here the way 30A is. I manage to avoid it entirely during the busy parts of the year.
I previously owned a golf cart, but never licensed it because of the safety issues.
I knew my guests, always family, would want to take it to the beach and wanted no part of that. I still cringe seeing kids on the rear facing seats and imagine the horror from a rear end collision even one at a low mph.
