Man, Bobby J, I never knew humpbacks could surf! :D

Seriously though, this is very cool. Is it common to see humpbacks in the Gulf?

I thought their preferred route was from Hawaii to Cabos. :idontno:

Memorial Day Weekend. They're tourists.

(And I'm very jealous that I didn't see them!)

The humpbacks in Alaska go to Hawaii. The humpbacks that come to the Stellwagon Bank, Provincetown MA, leave around October and go to the Caribbean, so they travel South via the Atlantic. It wouldn't be totally unusual to see them in the Gulf. They were most likely following a food source of small fish. They are also curious, especially the younger ones. I saw one come up to check me out in N.J. not far from the shore while I was boogie boarding. It takes them about 2-3 months both ways.

Thanks Mangy!!! I certainly don't remember seeing them on the East Coast though when I was growing up. Do you see them in NY?

They're have been spottings in N.Y, and CT, but their main food source is the Stellwagen Bank in MA. We go every year whale watching several times. I have my own sweater from the boat Portugese Princess that says Capt. Mango.

Why do the whales come to Stellwagen Bank?

Stellwagen Bank serves as a sumptuous smorgasbord for marine mammals. Of particular importance is the wealth of sand lance (also known as sand eels) that burrow into the coarse sands of the bank. Schools of these fatty (calorie-rich) fish provide excellent nutrition for the whales (as well as larger fish and sea birds) that feed in these waters all summer.

When the baby gets bigger, y'all need to go on a whale cruise one day.
In the meantime, here's a video..............

I wonder if any boaters got any pictures of the whales? The biologists at the Stellwagen Bank Foundation might be able to identify them. Each whale's tail is unique like fingerprints.

Only once, years ago, and it was with a calf. :wub:The baby came right up to the boat and they hung around us for about 30 minutes. It was truly unforgetable. They are on the endangered list. They don't know much about the right whale, especially it's breeding habits. They are rather elusive. I had no idea they were spotted around Ga. Pretty cool.

here's a link that was updated 3/08.

That's awesome! 18 babies this winter off the coast of Ga.
Who knows, maybe we'll get lucky again and see a pair this September feeding in the Bank. We were told that the Right whale would probably be extinct in our lifetime, and that we would never see a mother and calf again either. This is hopeful. Thanks, that made my night.

BTW, you can tell a humpback from a right whale by the blow. The humpback's is like a V, and the right whale's is straight up. So, if anyone spots a whale blow from afar, that's how you can tell the difference.

Did anyone see the whales passing?

Kelly Carr was in his kayak fishing and saw :yikes: two large whales go by near the second sand bar off Grayton Beach. Did anyone else spot them....I was hoping someone had pictures to share. The water was crystal clear he said and he saw quite a few nice sized fish and caught 5.

I heard there was a group of locals at Grayton Beach with a projector Saturday night and big screen showing Jaws! :shark: I missed that too!

And, oh yeah....I was in Tom Thumb and ran into a life guard who was burnt up and the cashier was getting on to him about not using sun screen and he said, "Believe me, that was the last thing I was thinking about as I was pulling all those people out of the water today!" He looked so tired!
