We have a very intense sheriff's race in progress in Walton County. All the candidates should be heard when it is possible to access them.
Today, Dennis Wise held an open question and answer session and introduction get togethe at the Smiling Fish Cafe between 1:00 P.M. and 2:00 P.M..
For all of SoWal's expressions of interest in the sheriff's political race and the opinions of all SoWal voters and, obviously non voters, the turn out was amazing! Two people, my wife and I attended. Please, SoWallers, no longer tell me how interested you are in hearing the facts and opinions candidates for local office can offer when you can't take the time to go and listen to them.
The conversation with Dennis Wise was informative and very interesting. He has no axe to grind with anyone and after talking with him at lenght (For over an hour since we were the only ones to show enough interest to show up) it is obvious to me he would make a wonderful sheriff for Walton County. But then what would I know, I was the only one interested enough to show up to hear one of our candidates for sheriff share his program and plans for one of the most important positions in Walton County.
In addition, as stated previously, the turn out on Wednesday night was extremely light and disappointing. When I hear all the complaints and griping on this board about what a lousy job the elected sheriff is doing, I will certainly know where to place the blame and it won't necessarily be with the sheriff!

Mr. Wise actually knocked on my door a few weeks ago and I spoke with him for a short while. He seems like a reasonable man with a descent plan for Walton county and is certainly better than what we have now. Come on people! I see a lot of bickering about the presidential race by people who obviously have already got their minds made up. What's the point? How about a little attention to what matters here locally.
Andy, I love your father's quote, but at age 55, I am have become a centrist and want ALL Americans to be served better by our political leaders. Neither the extreme left NOR the extreme right will do anything but pull us apart. This serves no one and should be obvious to Democrats and Republicans alike.
Change has always come from the bottom up, not the top down, anyway. We need true revolution in Washington. No, I don't mean anarchy, I mean true democracy. Our Congress is now only in the business of raising money and running for office...not serving Americans. I think we should throw all 535 of the self-serving bums out and start over. And if the new ones don't serve us well, throw all of them out, too!
Just a dream I've had for quite a few years...a republic that works.

No one came because they are probably tired of hearing Mr Wise "brag" about who contacts him, who he has pictures taken with, how many classes he has attended, etc.... I attend the Darlington "Sheriff Shoot-Out"today and it was one of the better forums that have been held, excellent audience participation, of course Sheriff Johnson was a no show. However I think Mr Wise forgot to load his gun for this "shoot-out" for he and Mr. Brown tied-- for last place in answers and presentation. I think its time for them to drop out along with Mr Corman who stated at Darlington that he would have Community Policing in the Sheriff's Office and would have his deputies help people move applainces into their homes? I dont belive Mr Corman knows what "Community Policing" is about; it sure is not about deputies being furniture movers.

I had other things to do, but I didn't see Mr Wise's "invitation" thread until this evening, anyway. Most people I know want to relax on the weekends, not talk politics.
EDIT: Holy Cow! I just read that entire Invitation thread. WoW!

analogman, believe it or not, I agree with your post wholeheartedly. I am very much a moderate or centrist as you put it. Unfortunately, as far as "a republic that works", don't hold your breath. I have seen it work in my lifetime, though, and I still hope to see it happen again. You have a greater chance of seeing it than I do for I have 20 some odd years on you.

Mr. Wise actually came to my door in Inlet Beach before we moved. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME A CANDIDATE ACTUALLY CAME TO MY DOOR.
That alone impressed me. Not saying that it would make me vote for him, I was just impressed that he took the time to come to ""inlet beach"" which is forgotten many times over...
I saw that the other thread was locked, I guess it was running amuck  or some people did not like what they were reading.

Nobody showed at Wises lunch? Hint Hint. Dennis is a wealth of knowledge but only a little bit goes a long way. Good to hear the Darlington forum was well recieved.

It is only "bragging" when you can't back up what you say. I think Dennis Wise can definitely back up what he says 99.9% of the time. (We are all entitled to at least .01% error or "bragging".) I know, and so does every other person in South Walton, that some candidates are running to split the vote and give the present sheriff an edge. I'm really sorry you were unimpressed by Mr Wise's presentation at Darlington. I was not there so there is obviously no way I can comment. I do know that at SWHS he was "hands down" the best presenter and expressed the most knowlege of all the candidates making presentatikons.

What? I completely missed this. He wants Deputies to move appliances into homes? I could understand moving kegs of beer, but furniture?

I agree with you 100% on this one.
Being photographed with someone implies absolutely nothing.
Irrregardless, this has no bearing on a local political race.Beach Comber

Yes but what is even greater in the less than tasteful scheme of things is his photo on page A13 of the Sun holding the flag with the guy from Okaloosa County. If DW dont think that one is politically motivated. Give them the flag, send your heart felt sorrows and be done with it. Why post your photo in the paper? Take a photo, keep it for your memoirs and move on. I find it appauling that DW would use this as an avenue to gain free political advertising. Come on Dennis, the only citizen you are conerned with is you..right? Do you think the family of a fallen Hero needs to see you in the paper holding a flag knowing what your motive is?:nono1: I give you credit though. Good way to get your name and pictures in the paper without any charge to your campaign. Maybe we do need a sheriff like you that can manipulate the system to your (or the taxpayers) benefit.

If he wants to be seen with bill o' , then thats his business. Birds of a feather and all that. I would cross the street to avoid the same air as bill o' . There seem to be a few good candidates, so there is a choice here. Mr Wise would be better that what we have, but I will look elsewhere. You can call it stupid, but I think if you watch hate tv you are the dumb one!

I finally found the time to read the Sun only today. I have been volunteering my services for various things the last few days. Sweat equity for good causes and friends are always good things.
I think you can tell by my previous post in this thread that I don't think Fox is a good source for news. In fact, I don't think it is news at all. That Mr. Wise thinks Mr O and Hannity are people to admire is disappointing to me. I think they are part of America's problem, not the solution to anything. As I said, the extreme right AND left serve few Americans. If you want to see what attitude Fox has created and perpetuated, read the "invitations" thread. The whole thing disturbs me greatly. Is that the kind of garbage we want our children to learn from us?
Andy A., you and your father are members of what I consider America's greatest generation. My generation...tune in, turn on, and drop out...believed in what amounted to little but simple, passive anarchy and was doomed to fail, but why did we let the pendulum swing SO far the other way and become a generation of such ultra conservative cynics. To vilify and crush your opponent because he/she does not agree with you does not make you right, it just makes you a bully. If we've learned anything from the last 7 years, it should have been that.
My generation and others have tried and are still trying to overcome racial and other ethical problems that America is still struggling with, but we will always be a work in progress, won't we? That's the way our forefathers designed our system.
And Andy, I will always hold on to my hope of a Republic that will once again serve a majority of it's people. It was conceived that way, wasn't it? Call me a dreamer.

If this weeks "Sun" is any indication, I suspect we can expect to see at least two photos a week in some W.C. publication, until November, of Mr. Dennis Wise in his 'photo opportunity' white uniform shirt (where's that shirt from again?) handing out plaques, flags, awards (you pick it) somewhere in the country. HoHum,....I can see that many useless plaques and awards on my attorney's wall anytime I want...... Mr. Wise deserves an "A" for public-relations-manipulation.....and posing...

Posing?
I can see how people are of the opinion that D. Wise is using the media for his campaign. You have to know Dennis to really know that he is a very proud law enforcement officer. His many years of service are what many strive to obtain.
Just because his political campaign has not been as successful as his career, does not qualify him as a "poser". Dennis Wise was, is and will be a COP. Very few understand the true meaning of that word, I know that Dennis does.
His plaques are very meaningful to him and to those who gave them. Do not cast judgement on something you know nothing about.

It is a shame some people think that way. Unfortunately some people will vote that way for the President.

Really people, do thorough research on ALL of the candidates and vote your conscience. If DW is your guy, vote for him. If someone else appeals to you, look into what they have done, not what someone else says about them. Everyone looks at things from different points of view. Look at things from your own view and vote for whom you think serves you best. The key word being think...for yourself!

People go by what they hear from others or see on the television. Just b/c DW was in a photo with O'Riley who cares. The people who do not vote for him just because of that reason alone are idiots. Plain and simple.

For the longest time, I thought he WAS the Walton County sheriff, because there was a picture of him in the Walton Sun every week- he was wearing a sheriff- like uniform, and the text was some sort of public service announcement.
Turns out, it was an ad (OK- PSA) for the law enforcement organization that he heads up (name escapes me) - but it truly did make him look like an acting sheriff. When he WAS NOT. Very creepy when I figured it all out, not to mention sneaky. I imagine there are others out there that assume he held some sort of big position because he was wearing a uniform in a picture that was in the paper every week.
It all appeared very deceitful to me, coupled with a campaign to sell a book. His pic with Bill O'Reilly made me snicker (how could it not), but it's not the only reason I am not supporting him.
