Anyone know about a deputy who smashed his personal vehicle into one of Ralph Johnson's Campaign signs early this morning. If they did, are they OK? I just caught wind of this.:idontno:

Deputy Crash

I saw that this morning on my way to the office. Looks like whoever it was just didn't stop at the light and went straight on through.

Good thing it didn't happen back in the '70s. There used to be a solid wall of low billboards there. You could see the concrete footers being dug up when they widened Hwy. 98.

Anyway, I heard Channel 7 was going to have a story on tonight about the crash. I'm sure it will be posted on their website after it is broadcast. www.wjhg.com

OK, thanks. I am assuming the officer is OK... I'll wait for the broadcast and then I'm sure someone will have something ignorant to say about it in relation to the election...

I didn't see a story on WJHG on the wreck. Someone had told me to "watch the news tonight." Given the context, I had thought that was going to be the story. Apparently, my information was wrong. Not the first time.

WRobert, I'd like to thank you for not erecting a campaign sign/billboard at 98/331. That is going against the grain, since every other candidate seems to have at least one posted at that location. Thanks! The absence of your signs being illegally posted is a joyful thing in my opinion, and it is noticed! Thanks for doing the right thing.

Yeah I heard something about it, heard the individual was arrested and after they performed the breath test then was unarrested and charged with wreckless driving. My question is how can someone be arrested for DUI and then after they blow under the legal limit then can be unarrested ? Just curious:idontno:

I don't know about the breath test stuff, nor arrest, nor unarrest, but I do know that the guard rail which used to be between the signs and the road, is now mangled. Holy CoW! Who cares about one of the many illegal Sheriff's signs at that location getting creamed? That had to be some serious speed to remove western half of the heavy-duty guard rail.

The part that had everyone talking yesterday was the fact that it just happened to be RJ's sign that got creamed. I am glad that the driver is OK.

Back in the 1970's, my cousin ran the stop sign at 331/98 and went into the billboards. He was very seriously injured. He did recover from his injuries, except for his larnyx being punctured. But even with that, he wasn't supposed to be able to speak again...but he can. Voice permanently changed, but he is fortunate to have one!

You have been around for a while, ShallowsNole. Do you live in the Shallows at the end of the paved part of East Point Washington?

Yeah I heard FHP was called since it was one of WCSO'S own and from what I heard which maybe completly wrong(you know how rumors are this time of the year) was arrested for dui and after the breath test was then unarrested and charged him with wreckless driving.
I just hope he wasn't seriously hurt.
I am not in law enforcement but just curious if what I have heard is correct , how can someone be arrested and then unarrested ? Anyone know about this and how it works?

Wreckless driving is an arrestable offense.

I believe it is up to the "arresting officer" to decide whether or not to make an arrest, and the cause for the arrest, just like an officer can decide to give you a warning ticket or a real ticket for speeding.

Yes. I'm not actually in the the subdivision as it is platted, but my parents were sort of responsible for it being named The Shallows. So yeah...

Am I related to you? ;-)

Actually, it "used to be" a very large county, including what is now known as Okaloosa, Bay and Holmes Counites. lol

The cop was on his own time in his own car and made a judgement error of speed. His BOC was well below the legal limit (.048). He may have fallen asleep and ran the stop light. Glad he is OK. He is charged with reckless driving.

Back up a minute. He "made a judgment error of speed?" How can you say that, followed by stating that "he may have fallen asleep and ran the stop light?" If you have looked at the missing heavy-duty guard rail and the missing signs beyond that, there is no way a logical person could say that "he made a judgment error of speed." There are no tire marks indicating that he never even braked nor attempted to turn through the T-shaped intersection.

SJ, I have not seen it but have heard basically what you have stated about no"tire marks" and the damage to the guard rail Do you think just leaving a party would have anything to do with any of this? But again just glad no one was hurt

I don't care to speculate on what caused the person to crash. I know no other information than my own observations at that intersection. I do know that the sole act of attending a party doesn't make people blind to traffic lights and roads ending into trees. Statistics show that talking or texting on a cell phone while driving, can be more hazardous than being legally intoxicated while driving, so let's not start pointing fingers as to the cause, without knowing.

Driving while eating has to be equally dangerous. I once heard someone say, "When drunks drive, at least they're TRYING to drive. People who eat and drive are trying to eat."

There are ways around a breathalyzer. Don't think a trooper is above trying to help a fellow LEO. I have personally seen such an instance with an off-duty bailiff years ago.

I agree that this cannot be attributed to "undue speed." He just didn't even try to make the turn!

forgetting something?

The cop was on his own time in his own car and made a judgement error of speed. His BOC was well below the legal limit (.048). He may have fallen asleep and ran the stop light. Glad he is OK. He is charged with reckless driving.

I think there are a few things being overlooked.

The driver of the vehicle is a certified law enforcement officer highly trained in the detection of impaired drivers and the affect alcohol has on the body.

His BAC (blood alcohol) being "well below the legal limit" is hogwash. The crash proved it was above his limit and ability. Some people are smashed with only one beer or mixed drink.

He could have been charged with impaired driving. Better cases have gone to court with less evidence.

It appears this particular traffic crash investigation was tainted as much as the driver.
Ask anyone that has a CDL, commercial driver license, and ask what the BAC limit is. You'll be shocked!!!!!
Ask surviving family members if .04 is enough to cause impaired driving. Call MADD, they will put you in touch with some.
