The League of SoWal Voters

Early voting has begun. Sadly, turnout patterns in the north part of the county vs. the south part of the county are following an old familiar pattern. If you cared about the blue signs, if you don't want to see SoWal become an overdeveloped shadow of the place you love, if you want a sense of community, of place -- then be a good citizen and go vote. Tell your friends to go vote.

There is one race that stands above the others in importance -- the District 5 commissioners race. I hope that we, as a SoWal community, can coalesce around a candidate. It would be a real tragedy to have someone who does not have a South Walton presence and is not known in our community as our only representative on the BCC, but there is a huge chance that will happen.

I am starting a poll, and encourage everyone to post positive messages in support of a candidate in hopes that we can, as a community, decide to throw our support behind a candidate or two in this race. We all know that the person who takes Cindy Meadows seat will shape our community in profound ways in the years to come.

I started talking about this almost a year ago. Voter turnout in south Walton is abysmal at best. I was assured that this year was going to be different by several very active posters on this board. And that this year south Walton would set the tone. Well here are the numbers so far.

south Walton 387

north Walton 744

These are approximate numbers and include voted absentee ballots and through Thursday of last week. So far it is running about 2-1 in early voting. And north Walton is historically very high on vote day, especially compared to south Walton.

I voted for Alan Osborne in early voting in South Walton. While there, no other voter was present. That sure beats the heck out of waiting in line 3-4 hours to vote like I've done in other towns. Get out and vote!

I know that Alan Osborne will make a good Commissioner. He will listen to people and facts, and ask the right questions, before making decisions on issues. He is honest and fair, and plays by the rules. I really don't like most politicians, and the only reason I really like Alan Osborne as a candidate, is that he isn't a "politician." He doesn't ride the fence waiting to see which side you are on, before he leans toward one side. He says what he believes, not what he thinks what you want to hear. I also think he will keep an open mind on the issues, and isn't scared to admit mistakes when they occur.

What coulk anyone possibly add to this evaluation of Alan Osborne. It is dead on with what I have learned in talking with the man.

While I should really plead the fifth on this, I've been somewhat shocked at the lack of traffic in the south end Supervisor of Elections office as well. Not that I watch it all the time - or care to - but during my too-frequent visits to the Coke machine and the employee restroom, the silence in there has been deafening.

Please encourage your friends and neighbors to cast their vote - there have been races in which one vote did make the difference. We are headed for an absolute mess in this county if folks do not come out.

I voted Saturday morning (love the early voting!) and I, too, was the only person there. It is nice as there are no lines, no wait, and no taking off from work; but, come on folks, we need to turn out.

With early voting it is so easy--and it is a duty and a privilege. How can people not vote? I hope people are educating themselves and will eventually turn out to cast their votes...every one does count.

My vote was #384 on the Sowal machine friday - usually I'm in the 500s! Apparently turnout is low this year despite the massive amounts of signs and biatching!

My wife and I voted on Monday morning and my vote was #7. And guess who was also there doing his civic duty, which in this case was to vote.....Alan Osborne.

Might be a good idea to remind supporters about the campaigning rules near voting locations.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the lady chatting to someone IN the election office while wearing a t-shirt advocating that people vote for a certain candidate is a no-no!

I will second this second. I can't imagine Alan beating around the bush on any issue. I sincerely hope that he prevails because above anything else, we really need a strong representative to voice the concerns of South Walton citizens.

I believe you are right and you are wrong. If the lady was actually campaigning for a candidate: i.e. "vote for so and so because we need him/her", then you are right. If she was merely wearing the tee shirt and was there to vote, was not discussing the races and was not passing out campaign literature, then you are wrong, IMO.

I went on friday (#356) @ about 2p, I did overhear one of the workers telling the women overseeing them that the turn out was heavier then it was the previous days.

I'm not sure on the exact rules (google failed me), but common sense would dictate that if I am inside the polling place and in the process of voting in a election, I should not be looking at something that reads "vote for candidate x."

Should not hang out. But can conduct business is my understanding. I always try to take off any buttons and such before I go into the courthouse office. People are going to talk no matter what you do, but try to give them less to talk about.

Walton County could probably double voter turnout if Kurt would unplug Sowal.com for an hour or two.

Voter turnout has been a problem for years. If South Walton got together, they could elect almost anyone to office with the numbers of voters in south. But if they stay lazy they
will most likely still be underrepresented even in their own districts. Too bad. People like to moan and groan but don't want to bother to vote.

I have about 10 signs that just say "Please Vote." If you would be willing to stand in SoWal and wave this sign at least 10 hours this week (and several hours on election day near SoWal polling places), stop by tomorrow and pick one up. Suggest entrance near Sandestin, 98 and along 30A intersections.
