Really???? Calendar on county's website for 2009-2010 has school running from July 30 to May 27. Why do schools need an entire extra month? How are high school students supposed to find summer work when their summer is only 8 weeks long?

Good grief! How did this just come to light, it seems like this should have been a big deal!

D'oh! The original calendar is from Walton County, GEORGIA.

Don't move there, they don't have summer vacation!

Ours was almost that early. But in a 3-2 vote they went with summer vacation.

Thank goodness. But I maintain there should never be school beyond Memorial Day. There is no reason that school would have to start in July or early August to accomplish this. Way back when we rode dinosaurs to school, we started the week before Labor Day and ended the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, and we had teacher inservice days every six weeks, instead of every nine.

Kill spring break. We're in Florida already.

They don't do summer school and the State killed the funding for summer FCAT.

We're starting back earlier, too. We've always started classes the Wednesday after Labor Day. Now we are starting the Tuesday before Labor Day. I usually spend the week before Labor Day at the beach. Can't do it this year.:bang:

Most kids do not show up around here until after Labor Day. That is why the state does not do the official census for payment until October.

So much for my attempt at multi-tasking. . . .

Thanks for the correction. I can breathe now.

On that subject, do any places offer year-round - or nearly year-round - school? I know it's been considered in several places, and I would guess it would be easier on working parents than looking for summer camp/care options for their kids. It would eliminate the whole summer job thing, though.

Yes many places offer year round school, there are several here in our area. They get 8 weeks off during the summer but they also get Spring Break, Fall break and Christmas break too.

Kids need a summer break!!! It's the time when they get to have a break and just be kids!!!

Some of the best and most character forming adventures of my life occurred over the summer!

Plus, some of the older kids need to WORK during the summer to earn money! Not to mention that nothing motivates you to excell in school like a summer of agricultural labor or minimum wage work!

I got all fired up when I thought they went back July 30, thanks goodness it's not until later. I just wish that the kids could be out by Memorial. My kid needs to get out there and start working. It slows down around mid Aug so send them back when it slows down. Just get us out by Memorial.

This thread keeps popping up and it makes me wonder how many poor kids are going to show up for the first day of school in Walton Co., FL on July 30!

I wouldn't sweat it. They might not know what date America was founded, but you can bet they'll know the correct date to go back to school. ;-)
