Hwy 331 may soon become, the "Beach Highway" (at least that is how it is drafted)
At tonight's County Commissioners Meeting, they will be voting on whether or not to rename Hwy 331, from Alabama to Hwy 98, the "Beach Highway." The City of Paxton has already requested the change to the "Beach Highway." (This would apply to unincorporated areas only, unless Freeport, Paxton and Defuniak Springs want to change the name, too). Alabama's Crenshaw County Commission has already approved of the change for hwy 331 in their stretch.
Interestingly, there is one other submission to the Walton County Commission, which doesn't state the city name, nor state on the document, but is signed by H D Edgar, Mayor. The interesting part is the word, "THE." The letter recognizes Hwy 331 name change as:
(in quotes): "THE Beach Highway" (and "THE" is capitalized and within the quotes. )
Remember the group wanting to change the name of NW FL to "THE Beach?" I wonder if this will be slipped into the other changes as well. What will the other Counties think if Walton County is designated as having "THE Beach Highway," since they are planning on spending much money to brand NorthWest Florida as "THE Beach." Just wondering.

SJ, I think Odom will be too busy surrendering himself to Leon County law enforcement to answer our e-mails. He just got indicted for his involvement in a "community project."

Maybe they'll get sued for false advertising. Not sure about anyone else, but I must be missing the part where 331 dead ends into a beach..

Good connection, rapunzel. I do believe that one of the founding members of Vision 3000's "THE Beach" was Jay Odum, one of the guys who also offered to privatize 331 bridge over the Bay, making it a toll road..

Good points all. Guess we can expect Odom and his gang to rename Highway 20 as Alternate THE Beach Road or Back THE Beach Road next. It would also be a short cut to the renamed OW-TB College (On the Way to THE Beach). Odom and Richburg could continue to conspire doing all sorts of renaming and special projects..

Just don't change the postal addresses from U.S. Hwy 331 S. The postal service is screwed up enough already.
Not to worry. The DOT already bought the right of way for much of the road south of Defuniak, and they have torn down most of the businesses.

Have any of you noticed that if you are west-bound on Hwy 98, at the intersection of 331, there is a south turn lane and a left turn traffic signal? Ever wonder why?

Man you guys jump off on some of the darnedest things. This name change is nothing more than a legislative resolution. There are roads all over this State, for that matter in Walton County, that have those little brown signs where the legislature adopted a name for a segment of road. It means nothing. It does not affect addresses, signs, or anything else for that matter. Going to be interesting though how they do that when the legislature just recently named a section of 331.
The secondary road name for US Highway 331 S inside the City of DeFuniak Springs is Freeport Highway. Roads can have multiple names according to the Postal Service. They would prefer that everyone use the primary name, but as long as they have it in their database they can handle a second, third, or more naming system.

I'm assuming the FLDOT planner/engineer was lazy. If you go directly south of 331 it dead ends into Gulf Trace. Do you really think those folks want a major road ending near their entrance? A certain singer would probably move.
According to the PA's website there is only one tiny parcel that isn't state forest, and I'm pretty sure that even without current economic troubles the state could be convinced that we have sufficient north south routes in that area.

They just did a couple of years ago...instead of WWII Veterans Lane, it's now Institution Road. Goes from SR83 by the Walton Correctional Institute to the county landfill. My hat's off to the small group of veterans who lobbied long for this small change.
