Anybody heard about this? Drove by tonight and noticed the central area of it buckled in. Half the parking area was taped off. They just had the ribbon cutting ceremony a week or so ago -

Looks like sombody made an 'oops', but I can't find any news on it.

ooops

"Jonathan Armbruster, an engineer with Taylor Engineering Inc., said the parking lot now is supported by concrete pilings, making it more structurally sound and less prone to damage when hurricanes or other severe weather phenomena rip through the area."

This is version three, isn't it?

We usually stay at the Maravilla condos just up the street from there. i was glad that the parking lot was being fixed. I hated walking by Pompono Joes and seeing cars parked on both sides of the road every night.

Nothing in the papers this morning, but of course it didn't happen across the street from their office, so I'm not holding my breath.

What a waste. When will we realize that this is SAND, it can't support heavy structures?

Saw it yesterday. Appears the concrete top layer heaved up and cracked, not a collapse.

Poppy's correct, it has not collapsed. It is open on the east side of the restroom (Pompano Joe's side) and there will be some repairs made to the area around the restroom in the following days. It does not appear to be structural, but most likely the thin concrete topping.

By the way, the structure is concrete pile supported and thus the sand is not holding the structure up. Sand was holding up the old design.

I understand the engineering, but let's look at it after the next tropical storm grazes the area and the pilings are exposed.

The pilings vary in length but average more than 50 feet which would have them into the ground below the erosional area on the beach by more than 25 feet in most places. Not to mention there are three piles per row and numerous rows, etc... For comparison with much shallower piles, smaller diameter and wood versus concrete, look at the restroom that has survived since before Opal and various other structures along the gulf-front.

A vibrating compactor did that? Yeeeah right! I smell a design flaw or possibly poorly laid concrete on the surface. Looks like it expanded more than they expected it to.

Thanks for the pics!

WOW that is THIN concrete topping! Again, perhaps every single piling will stay right where it is, but I am still saying that a tropical storm 70 miles away is going to eat this thing up.

So what is this repair going to cost?

The top layer is applied over preformed sections that were trucked in and placed by crane over hundreds of pilings driven deep in the sand. If a storm takes this thing out we are all in trouble!

I drove by there yesterday and looked at the heave. It looks like expansion joints either weren't working properly or maybe there weren't enough of them. It's buckled up due to pressure of expansion.

Another quality job by Crystal Beach Construction?

I'm calling extreme BS that an overweight UPS truck turning around caused that! Cracks maybe, upward heave in the center of a recently poured section no. Hard to tell from the pics, but it looks like the section below is still level so the concrete topping was the problem, not the structure. Workmanship flaws IMO.

Now that I've looked at the pictures I'm betting someone didn't secure their anchor.

They laid the concrete earlier today - see what happens.

A little way off the subject, but is the Whale's Tail open after the fire? We are heading down tomorrow.

Whale's Tail is gone. The building was knocked down, I think. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong...

The Whale's Tail is currently being reconstructed after lightning hit the building in March of this year. The lightning ignited the building like kindling. The Whale's Tail will be back. The place is too lucrative not to.

I think they hoped to have it open by July but from the looks of their progress I would say more like this fall.

there wasnt any lightning at whales tail.. it was an electrical shortage...

And i wonder what tax we are going to see now to fix the parking lot.

I think the county should partner with the restraunt for video to watch the parking lot so when something happens like the beer truck or coke truck not following the signs and parking on it they can pay for the repairs. A big truck moving over the new parking structure can cause it to do just that. it takes years for it to dry.

I also hope the county MAKES the Whale's Tail (Sea Scape) to put in parking for ALL of their customers and quit letting them park on the sides of the road in front of the NO Parking signs.
