Park in Driftwood

Okay what is the deal with the park in Driftwood Estates? I thought that place was a flood zone. Is it really smart to lay asphalt that water can not permeate in that area? I always understood that there were suppose to be lakes in that area. Is this what happens when you complain enough about an issue? They go and build you your own park to keep you quiet?

No robert, that area has been a county Park and dedicated to the Public since 1979. It was NEVER where the lakes were labled. Sandestin claims it as their preserve area and yet have NEVER owned it since it was platted to the public. The county at one point didn't even know they owned it and a developer was dumping muck on it until we complained. Then the residents and multiple HOA's in driftwood DONATED over 80,0000 dollars to the county to build it.

What happens when you speak loud enough, is they take away your right to discuss things like public parks and the failure of the county to keep the taxpayers from footing the bill in the name of private profit. But hey, I'm sure you are much more researched on driftwood and the DRI than I am. Why don't you research something more intresting than this Robert. How about going and reading the minutes of 11 May 2009 on the county accepting and acquiring easements for Driftwood estates Drainage. READ the attached documents and notice how the county proposing entering into an agreement with Sandestin HOA and the Burnt Pine HOA to acquire and relocate a drainage easement for Driftwood estates. Please note the proposal to accept and imdemnify Sandestin and hold the county responsible for EVERYTHING.
Which begs the questions?
Didn't the county spend the last four years telling Driftwood residents they had nothing to do with the SOA?
1. If thats true why do they need Sandestins permission to move our easement platted back in 1979?
2. Why did that happen the week after I was told nothing would be discussed or happen until our Special master hearing.?
3. Why would the County try to obtain easements to finish a private development and accept and request an agreement to be responsible, instead of holding the developer responsible for Non compliance, when it could cost the county millions? The county has already accepted an indemnification agreement signed by Sandestin back in 1988 that says SANDESTIN is resonsible for everything that came from an abandonment proceding. The county acknowledged this agreement is binding to the successors of the original agreement. Why reverse it now?
4. If you read the county minutes from the testimony over lifting the moritorium back in 2005, the county said they had the easements, certifications and permits already. Now they are trying to obtain what they told myself and a State agency(DCA) they had.
5. Robert, if you thought it was a flood zone how come you never spoke up saying let's not build houses in flood zones, why the sudden worry of asphalt? Are concrete foundations more permeable? NOTTTT!!!!

No robert, you don't get things no matter how loud you speak, even fair and unbiased treatment. You get goverment help and "Topcover" when your development or business carries a thicker wallet and a bigger political footprint than mine. Unfortuneatly, it doesn't have a thing to do with what is right and wrong.

I don't think it was supposed to hurt, but John R's not the only one to figure it out.

Knock yourself out. If you know me, you also know I do not care. I think it is hilarious that SWGB thinks we are the same. I only wish I could keep multiple identities straight. Would not have to PM so many people.

Robert,
If you thought the park issue was bad enough to comment on, why silence to the hard questions? Guess nobody's shocked about this kind of corruption in Walton. The reason I don't comment as much on here is it's mostly idle talk anyway and it's been baseball season with the kids. Lot's of people talk here but few will step to the podium. I'm hoping other people will step forward and demand better government in public, our kids deserve that.

Because there is so much to work on. You seem to have the Driftwood thing under control. I am working on some other stuff at the moment.

I'm good with that answer Robert, If it's something like my issues please post the info here. I still read sowal a lot, but I am working on a lot of paperwork right now. Just because I'm quiet, doesn't mean I'm not working on things.
I'm trying to work on a 40 acre lease for a dollar a year to the county from the state for some public parks instead of spending riduculous amounts of tax money on it.
I hear the county is buying some land for 22,000 and acre in the north end and it borders a commissioners land and belongs to a highly paid county employee's father. This rumor came from Mamie's and is unconfirmed but I'm looking into it. It would be intresting to see the county sell school property in Sandestin for 25k an acre then spend 22k and acre in the north end. The tax roles we pay sure don't reflect that type of property value analysis.:idontno: Note if you compare the two in this depressed market, the values we see now are about 99 to 2000 values. If we are broke as a county what are we buying land for now?
Good Luck,
Alan

Checked on the ownership thing and so far nothing to it. They are getting another appraisal, the last one was appraising it as an aquifer, not for recreational use. Two more public hearings to go though. The dollars to do it are preservation dollars generated off of developers. So thanks I guess. It is a pretty place.

As far as the other thing, as soon as I can get the county to answer my questions I will post what I find. While it is not dollar bonuses, it is special perks paid to four part time employees that make this thing appear to be very similar to the situation at the Okaloosa Tax Collector's office. So far it appears to have cost us about $50K and grows at about $2K per month.

Alan,

I guess this is where I am starting to see a problem. The BCC is kicking in $100K of public tax money to build this park and there is NO PUBLIC PARKING for the residents and taxpayers of Walton County. And I was told this was done on purpose because the neighborhood did not want 'outsiders' using their park, that I am paying for, they wanted it solely for their use.

Sort of makes me want to say that you guys need to just go ahead and fix your own drainage problem since you want to be that way.

Good to see this is being resolved. I am now hearing that there will be between 40-60 public parking spaces made in this park. Going to be a great place for family reunions and stuff. Maybe they can even do weddings there. I wonder if the thing is going to have any ball fields.
