Has this been going on for a long time?

PANAMA CITY, Fla. ? Miles offshore, a fight is raging between angry anglers armed with guns and bombs and bottlenose dolphins, the marine mammals popularized in movies and TV shows like "Flipper."

That's terrible.:(

But a friend of ours has a lake that got overtaken by carp. So hubby and friend went carp shooting. Do you need a hunting or a fishing license for that? Or since it is on private property, neither?:idontno:

Somehow I don't feel warm and fuzzy towards carp as I do towards dolphins.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. We had the dolphin circling our boat while fishing in the Gulf several years ago and we were in awe, but we don't fish for a living either. There has to be another way of solving this problem.

HMMM, let's see.

Dolphin live in the Gulf and need to eat fish to survive. Fishermen entertain themselves by fishing in the Gulf and don't need the fish to survive. Which one should have the right to toss pipebombs and shoot at the other?

As I've said before, I prefer to be around animals, because they are more civilized.

They probably are breaking laws/regs by shooting carp (nasty bottom feeders), but IMO there is a big difference between trying to reduce the numbers of an nasty invasive species and hurting a beautiful animal.

My last deep sea fishing trip we had 2 dolphins come - a mama that was teaching the baby to steal fish from us. They followed us to the next area, then we finally lost them. Since that was a highlight for us, even though they were taking our fish, I can't imagine hurting them for it.

Who would've thunk that feeding wild animals and training them that boats coming out of certain ports means food would cause them to become a nuisance? Hello McFly!

I assisted in the transport of a dead dolphin for the Marine Mammal Rescue folks this year that had a suspected bullet hole in it. It was found locally.

There is no reason to be harming the dolphins. The people making a living from their boats are frustrated that a law was put in place that is now teaching dolphins to follow boats rather than learn to catch fish on their own.

Give a dolphin a fish and it eats for a day....teach a dolphin to fish and it eats for a lifetime.

It is a rather odd problem as the fish that are being thrown back never make it back.
