If that's the same location as James Lee Park, he didn't make it.

One drowns, several more rescued from surf
One person drowned Friday evening at James Lee Park, a beach safety chief said, and lifeguards spent Saturday pulling more swimmers from the same spot.

The danger there was "just a really bad rip" current, said Destin Beach Safety Chief Joe D'Agostino.

"The rest of Destin is placid," he said.

Neither he nor Destin firefighters could identify Friday's drowning victim. The incident occurred just after 6 p.m., D'Agostino said.

By about the same time Saturday, he said lifeguards had rescued 10 people from the same area, despite it being cordoned off.

"People have a tendency to think we just need to get more signs out, more flags, and that's just not working," he said.

Friday afternoon - I am standing on a public walkover for a better vantage point on the cat race. Family comes down - one of the little girls (I don't do ages but shorter than my hip) looks at the water/beach and says "uh, oh it's red flags and I see rip tides"..............father's response "so don't drown." Her attempts to go to the pool instead were denied and within 10 minutes the kids were back with floats and Mom (no Dad).

So, how is the person who got in trouble at Savannah Place? Isn't that at Seaside in SoWal?

Too bad fertility is not IQ dependent.

During the last several days I have decided the visiting kids are smarter than most of their parents.

My 2nd fave is the kid who watched me ease into the small parking space at Publix and told her father "Dad, you did a horrible job parking!". Apparently those young eyes can see things like white lines and the crooked tires FAR over them ;-).

Did you see the new sign on the corner of 98 & 331 in front of the TDC? It has the flag system listed on it. Good idea, but too bad it's most visible when leaving town instead of entering.

I am constantly surprised by how few little kids have life preservers on or how far away their adults are - waterwings or a float are completely useless as lifesaving items.

A life preserver would keep their little head ABOVE water and reduce sunburns too.

MO TOO My little girl is 5 she nevers enters the water without me. The only time She is in the water without a lifejacket is when there are no waves and we are basicly playing in the surf again with me right there. If there are waves her little toe does not touch the water without a lifejacket.Me and my husband never sit on the beach together because we are always taking turns standing right next to her. We are glad to see sand castle time come we can sit and talk. It is a little more work than plopping down in a chair watching the waves all day. But our children are gifts from God we can not neglect or endanger them. The world does that on its own without the parents help.

Exactly what I thought when I saw it. Hey Tom Thumb, how about some good community PR and letting the TDC borrow a small slice of your space for a couple of months? It's a win-win.

Or, could it be put at the south side of where 331 ends?

I saw that...and, forgive me, but I can't help saying--after spending tons of money on the Big Blue Monsters...you'd think they could have spent enough to at least paint the lumber before they installed it in front of the Visitors Center, on the biggest holiday of the year...okay, now, I've said it. I will shut-up--:bang:

NEVER shut up, gw! SoWal needs you!

That gives me an idea...they should repaint, if possible, the remaining BBMs with the flag system and Leave No Trace, if they insist on leaving them up!!!!!

I don't mind the unpainted lumber nearly as much as the fact that you can't READ the most important info - what the colors are and what they mean! :bang:

I agree, all it takes is 10 seconds for tragedy to strike! My daughter is 9 and she likes boogie board surf. I usually plant myself out in the water at a distance I feel good about for her to come out to and watch her surf between me and the shore until her heart is content! I am lucky though that I am on Eastern Lake and when the ocean is too rough, she can just play in the outflow (which we call 'The Canal' and where we park our canoe) The parents that pay little attention to their kids on the beach utterly horrify me! (Along with the people who let their large dogs run free on the beach, but that is another story! lol)
