David Pleat, a Destin attorney and business owner and Walton County resident, will announce his candidacy for Florida House of Representatives, District 7 in the upcoming 2010 election. The announcement will be made at the Walton County Democratic Party?s quarterly meeting on Thursday, August 27, 6:30 PM, at the Walton County Library Coastal Branch.

?As a practicing lawyer and businessman with 24 years of experience running my own law firm and title company, I have gained an invaluable understanding about what is at stake as we navigate these complicated economic times. I am now at a point in my life that I believe I can make a practical difference in my community by running for the District 7 House seat in 2010,? explains Pleat.

The House District stretches south and west to Okaloosa and Walton Counties, northeast to Jackson, Calhoun and Liberty Counties, and east to Bay, Wakulla, Leon and Gadsden Counties. Pleat, who is the only Democrat who has announced at this time, plans to visit local leaders and citizens throughout the District over the next few months to listen to their concerns about Florida?s future.

Cool. Finally something to do. I thought his wife was a Republican.

So his wife is a Republican. Why would that make a difference?

He is going to be working on convincing a majority of people to agree with his political philosophy. Yet he has been unable to convince the person he lives with to go along? Me and my wife do not agree on everything. But we are not nearly that dissimilar. I like to think I have had some impact on her over the last 25 years. Of course now all the women will applaud her for her independent thinking.

Other than the fact that you're just trying to stir the pot, I'm still not sure what your point is?

If he were a Republican and she were a Democrat would that simply mean he was a bad Republican for not having his wife "fall in line"?

Maybe, just maybe, they are able to have opposing political view points and remain married.

Do you think they both vote? Wouldn't they just cancel each other out?

I hate that expression -- like married people have to agree on politics. In the big picture, about 96% of votes cancel out in any close election. Voting is voting, and I believe women were given the right to vote in recognition of the fact that sometimes they have their own thoughts and opinions.

Bdarg and I had a "mixed" marriage politically speaking for many years. We still don't agree on everything, but we tend to have the same general ideals now- we are on the same page but still argue the finer points.;-) It would be pretty dull to be married to someone who has the same exact thoughts and ideas.

And this is weird- I meant to quote Rapunzel and SWGB, not Just Curious.

I would respectfully disagree. My wife and I agree almost completely on political matters and have many lively discussions regarding them. It is somewhat like preaching to the choir but it is never dull.

OK, now that was uncalled for. :nono1:

He's voted in every election since 2002 according to my records and voted early in the 2008 Presidential Election.

As has his wife, however she has never voted early.

Note: My records only go back to 2002.

Compare the dates they have voted to ones that I have voted since 2002. If they both were Democrats I could understand.

SWGB,

What I do not understand is why the Democrats are running two people in this race. Pleat and that other guy east of here, I do not remember his name. Coley has been a really good Representative for the south end especially. I know she voted for me to help subsidize homeowners insurance in that area and even stated at a meeting one time that she did not have a problem with people in her northern areas paying more for homeowners insurance if it helped the people on the beach, since the people on the beach drew tourists into the area. But being a Republican incumbent, and having a good relationship with leadership makes for a very expensive race. And having to run in a primary and then go to a general is going to be difficult at best. But I Pleat all the luck in the world, nothing like competition to make someone answerable to the people.

I agree. I didn't mean that she needs to do whatever her husband does, but if I knew that my wife was going to vote opposite of me in an election I would rather not take the time off work to vote... but then I wouldn't get that cool sticker.

I'm not sure what you are talking about? According to the Florida Department of States division of elections the current candidates are the incumbent and David Pleat.

Whether your vote is canceled out by your spouse or not, are you sure you would completely disagree on every candidate or issue on the ballot? Of course there's also the ability to double your vote by convincing your spouse that you would cancel each other out and don't need to vote, then vote anyway.

That is strange. I could have sworn I saw where someone over near Wakulla was announcing a week earlier. Certainly not the same guy, cause a campaign manager would never let news of such importance be announced anywhere but the candidate's home county to start with. That just makes good sense.

You might be confusing the fact that the Wakulla Newspaper was the first to announce David Pleat's candidacy.

Huh? I thought Pleat lived in Walton County. Is Wakulla a Freedom paper also?

This thread and others like it is not an appropriate place to take pot shots at each other. You two need to give it a rest, or take your spats to PM or the lounge.

I am also disappointed that no one reported the drive-by post that got personal, which has now been deleted. We need your help people.

Thanks!
