I have yet to see a bee buzzing my flowering blueberries (alright, ONE bumble)

Anyone know why? Back home the bees buzzed my flowering bushes galore.

Thanks for any help!

Azaleas haven't bloomed here yet. Weird. I guess it was all of the cold weather until last week.

Normally azaleas and dogwoods here are just past peak at Masters time. I'm sure that at Augusta National they have their tricks to have the azaleas there at peak for the tournament.

Bees? Have only seen a few. Global cooling.

My dogwoods are in blossom here - strange that yours aren't. Azaleas are in great shape in Augusta.

Franny, please do!!

So anyway, back to the local bees, has anyone else noticed fewer bees? Grace, we had crop dusters spraying all kinds of crap in LA AND we had the mosquito truck and we still had lots of bees buzzing around the new blossoms - so I just wonder.... someone mentioned the harsh winter. :idontno:

Anyway, any local bee aficionado reading please chime in.

Bees have been in trouble for a few years now. It's called colony collapse disorder. If you google it you will get all kinds of stuff - many possible causes and theories - loss of biodiversity, climate change, pesticides, mites. Science Friday had an interesting program on bees the other day.
Science Friday Archives: Bees and Beekeeping
Seems many more people are getting interesting in beekeeping.
I personally have not seen "real" bees in my yard (Seagrove) in quite a while, like years. But I do have thriving carpenter bees. So far they have not done enough damage to worry me, so I'm leaving them alone. They are interesting to watch.
Have you talked to the honey guy at the Seaside farmer's market?

There was an editorial piece in our Sunday paper about no azaleas or dogwoods blooming yet. The writer is very sad. Normally it's a fairyland of blossoms around here.

PS - I do not support the use of chemical pesticides. However, I cannot blame the mosquito truck entirely. Years ago we had lots of bees and fire flies, and we had the mosquito truck then too. Something else, or several somethings, are happening too.
BR, my azalea has buds and they are just now starting to open. Very late this year, the latest I can remember. Usually blooms here mid-March. I think it must have been the cold winter.

I think Bee Farmers received stimulus funding to spur the economy because of the gross reduction in Pollen Bees. I can't remember exactly, but I am pretty certain this was in the Bill; and, by standards, it wasn't a large amount. I think less than $5MM. I also seem to recall a 60 Minutes Special or DateLine segment within the last few years about the reduction of these bees and how this will damage the economy.

But, maybe they just haven't made to the beach area, yet.

I live in the country (no spray even close to me) and right now I have loads of bees. My son was here yesterday and had a fit.! He went on and on about me going to store to get something to spray. I don't mind them as long as they aren't carpenter bees.

Actually after I made my last post, I noticed buds starting to burst on the azaleas and saw that beautiful chartreuse color of dogwood flowers starting to pop open.

I agree about the cold winter.

Thanks for all the great suggestions and info and poetry :D

Maybe I am SO new here they haven't found me!! I will have to vibrate the little blossoms tomorrow. I've done that before in greenhouse with tomatoes and it works great.

Happy to hear that others are having lots of bees.

BTW, Monday I was in Destin and there were TONS of azaleas in bloom (never saw a bee though lol) :D

Thanks again and I will ask honey person at Seaside next time I am there.
