Irregular Beach Erosion?

We were walking the beach in Seaside earlier today & saw some strange erosion patterns near the water line. It looked as though some kids (like mine) had dug out major stretches of sand along the shore, leaving a 100 yard stretch with a jagged, saw tooth appearance. It also seemed to correspond with sections where more of the green sea grass (or is it algae?) had washed up on the beach.

Later on this evening we were walking along the same stretch and the sand in these areas was VERY unstable. Sank up to my calf before scrambling out. I didn't know if this was a natural occurrence or due to the presence of the green algae.

Has anyone had previous experience with this?

This is all natural. The green slime is June grass which comes in June. We need this seaweed to build the sand dunes. I just wish the powers that be would not rake it up or scrape the beaches so nature could take over again.

We saw the same thing in Seagrove the other day. It is all very cool till I sunk up to my knee... more than once. The best spot was where someone had built 3 Sandmen, I wish I had taken a photo. They were so cool!
Yes letting nature take over again would be a good idea!

Totally normal, have experienced this several times over the years with june grass & wet sand, but still disconcerting every time I sink up to my knees like that...

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I hit one spot today and I was knee deep. The green was under a layer of sand and I missed it. The love of my life is still amused.

Yep, saw this as well the other night. Pretty funny and shocking at first to sink so far down in the sand!

All due to hole digging, nothing unusual.

Though there was one that was quite impressive - they had a cool fleur de lis/curlique design dug with a bridge over it near the water.
