So, I've heard thru the grapevine that the local DFS police want to become unionized.........any thoughts on this?? Also, what's it mean to a small town agency when FDLE (the state's 'big brother' for law enforcement) has to come in and do serious inquiries? Maybe it's time for a new city chief?:idontno:

What is FDLE asking about? Not nice to start something and not finish it.

More Light

Maybe I can help offer some light, there are rumblings of discord at the DeFuniak Springs Police Department. The Police Benevolent Association (PBA) was voted on this last Wednesday or Thursday. The official recognition of the voted will be next week some time. It is being whispered (only because no one wants to throw their name out) that the DFSPD had sent a Lieutenant over to witness the votes being tallied and the Chief's Association had sent over an attorney to represent the City Marshal. From what I understand 15 officers were able to vote, 13 voted yes for the union and 1 voted no. It makes me wonder why 87% (13 out of 15) of the officers think they need protection from the administration. I do not remember there being hardly any discord like this when Sheriff Adkinson was the City Marshal. What could have happened in the time between Sheriff Adkinson's reign and Chief Weeks'? Chief Weeks was the number 2 man under Sheriff Adkinson. It seems that he is destroying everything Sheriff Adkinson had wanted to build up at the department.

It is also a shame that officers feel that they can only whisper about the going ons at the department. I understand that the majority are afraid to say to much due to the fear of retaliation from the agency.

I also have heard that FDLE has come in to the department and requested certain records, whether it was a standard request (which they do at times) or part of an investigation will be hard to determine. It is being whispered that individuals filed two separate formal complaints on the agency (which should be public record) and that FDLE was notified of events that were going on which are against FDLE protocol.

I am sure the majority of the people saw the Channel 7 news where Chief Weeks talked about one individual was demoted and one was terminated and how it was bad timing. Really, why is that news worthy. The one demoted reportedly had several items listed, but I find one of them partially interesting, is that the individual knew about the possible union and did not notify the City Marshal (wondering). The individual terminated was after they possible made a formal complaint (wondering again).

Why shouldn't they start a Union. It is their right to organize and usually there is a reason they do so. As for why, I don't know but I support their right to do so.
