Huckabee denies ties to Our Generation campaign
The carefully concealed trail leading to the Walton County origins of a group called Our Generation winds awfully close to the doorstep of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.
But Huckabee, a Blue Mountain Beach resident, says he has no involvement with Our Generation, an organization that has been playing an oversized role in two Walton County Commission races.
Our Generation’s ad campaign, which has been heaping criticism on incumbent commissioners Bill Imfeld and Bill Chapman, is being run through a business known as The Wickers Group.
Bryan Sanders, a partner in The Wickers Group, is Huckabee’s son-in-law.
Huckabee responded to questions about the family connection in an email from the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.
“Wasn’t even aware the agency my son-in-law works for was doing ad placement until I got an email from (Walton Sun reporter) Deb Wheeler yesterday,” Huckabee said. “Wickers does ad placement all over the country. ... I can assure you I’m not funding. I’m still recovering from my own campaign!”
Carolyn Barber, another partner in The Wickers Group, is believed to be handling the Our Generation campaign in Walton County. An email she sent to WZEP AM radio in DeFuniak Springs on July 5 requests “spots” to run between July 7 and July 29.
“Attached are orders and paperwork for my client, Our Generation,” the email said.
Barber did not return phone calls seeking comment.
Imfeld and Chapman say they are being targeted by wealthy South Walton beachfront homeowners for their stance on customary use of local beaches.
“It seems all they’re focused on is an attempt to do a take-out strike for people in favor of customary use of the beaches,” Imfeld said.
Many coastal homeowners contend they should control the plot of beach they purchased with their residences.
Imfeld and Chapman have taken the stance that because Walton County’s 26 miles of beaches have always been available for public use, they should, to some extent, remain so.
While attacking Imfeld and Chapman, the Our Generation ads have promoted the candidacies of Melanie Nipper and Bill Fletcher.
Nipper is running against Imfeld in District 3. Fletcher is running against Chapman in District 1. All the candidates are seeking office as Republicans.
Huckabee, who owns a beachfront home in South Walton and has advocated for private property rights, has contributed $1,000 to Nipper’s campaign. His wife contributed another $1,000.
Both Nipper and Fletcher say they know nothing about Our Generation or who is behind it.
“I don’t know anything in the world about them,” said Fletcher, who Our Generation calls “a proven business leader.”
“I don’t think anybody believes that,” Fletcher added.
Both Imfeld and Chapman have filed complaints against Our Generation with the First Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office and the Florida Elections Commission.
The State Attorney’s Office is reviewing information provided by the commissioners, according to Greg Marcille, the Judicial Circuit’s chief assistant state attorney.
The Florida Elections Commission does not comment on complaints filed or ongoing investigations.
Fliers sent out in Walton County by Our Generation originated from the Georgetown Business Center at 1101 30th St. in Washington, D.C.
Company paperwork lists Dennis Hoffman, Rosie Johnston, Dan Perrin and Mark Murphy as officers in Our Generation, a nonprofit “social welfare organization.”
The Wickers Group’s home office lists a San Francisco address.

Lies all lies! I don't believe a word of it! How would a career politician NOT KNOW what his son-in-law was doing in his own backyard??

Bob I'm disappointed, folks on Sowal and facebook had me convinced Gov. Huckabee was behind me and I like the guy. I have a suggestion for the Our Generation people; go to Alabama, set up a bunch of dba's and nobody will attack you! Are any of the names you listed with The Wicker's Group Walton County residents?

I'm disappointed that people find it inconceivable that a Career Politician would lie. They have been doing it in this County for years.

I'm disappointed that people make accusations about individuals based on past behavior of others.

As Governor Huckabee is a politician I find it difficult to think he has never uttered an untruth. While I haven't researched it I suppose that I will just have to register this as my opinion.

"Governor Huckabee did not lie, he may have been careless with his words"

Bob Hudson is right, we are just chasing our tails speculating. The authorities are investigating but we will probably not know the results until after the election and private citizens have probably exhausted their own investigative abilities. They have found smoke and people can draw their own conclusions. But meanwhile the county has serious issues and we all need to be vetting candidates and exploring where they stand on what matters to us. As far as Fletcher and Nipper, they both deny involvement or knowledge and right now you must either take them at their word or not but I doubt there is any substantive proof either way until after the election. But we can ask questions on the issues and find out where they stand.

Danny, don't get me wrong about my comment. I was just looking at other comments and really don't care that Our Generation is advertising. I do have issues that they remain secret and it may cost some candidates votes. My comment about Governor Huckabee is just a generalization of what I think of all politicians.

Having lived in Arkansas during both Bill Clinton’s and Mike Huckabee’s tenures as Governor of the state, I can state that Bill was an unusually good liar way back then and Mike was an unusually good and honest public servant while Governor. Arkansas prospered under Governor Huckabee. He left office able to look with justified pride at what his Administration accomplished under his leadership.
We’re all too familiar with the grandiosity and sense of entitlement that infect most men and women elected to office. Governor Huckabee had to move out of the Governor’s Mansion for a period of years while the Mansion was renovated. A businessman donated a triple-wide trailer to the state, moved the trailer into the back yard of the Governor’s Mansion, and Governor and Mrs. Huckabee resided in that trailer during the long renovation period.
I tell this to illustrate the servant mentality and unpretentiousness of the man. He is not a perfect man, but I would suggest that he is among the best of the best. To tar him simply because he has given a significant part of his life to public service is beneath you, Bob Wells. I think you’re a better and more thoughtful guy than that.
I would submit to you that were our County Commissioners to successfully emulate Mike’s values and integrity in the conduct of our business, Walton County would be a much better place to live. It would also be a better place to live were its citizens to focus on the attributes, records, and platforms of the candidates themselves rather than on the identities of people lawfully expressing their political opinions, whether in opposition to certain candidates or in support of others.
I will be voting for Bill Fletcher, Melanie Nipper, and Cindy Meadows on the basis of my knowledge of them and of Mr. Imfeld’s and Mr. Chapman’s votes and attitudes while in office, and I’m not at all disturbed by PACs or 501 organizations lawfully expressing their own opinions. I am, however, disturbed by the gratuitous insults slung so freely in this forum at good people. Look around and see where that sort of behavior has taken us, then look in the mirror.

I bet you'd never see Bill Clinton driving a golf cart, shuttling folks from the church parking lot to the building. Pretty certain it wotld be beneath him.Unfortunately it is easy to cherry pick politicians you like versus ones you don't and claim those you like are clean and fresh fallen snow. An example of this is the attacks on Commissioner Jones, Imfeld, Chapman, Meadows and Comander. Do I agree with what they do all the time, nope. But the will of the voters have placed them in office whether I like it or not. Because Governor Huckabee lived in a trailer or drives a golf court to move people to the front door of the church does not change my opinion of politicians in general. An example I felt was uncalled for happened to Commissioner Jones where people mocked her faith. I get it maybe she wasn't/ isn't portraying what people think she should. I certainly won't judge her for what that. As I said, it was my opinion of what I think of politicians in general and I don’t have any evidence to back it up.

I don't think people mocked her faith I think (at least for myself) I and/or they were mocking the fact she doesn't walk that walk daily.
Because of my agnostic feeling towards faith in general, I just find it highly hypocritical of anyone who professes "Christianity" to not walk in that faith in their daily lives. In other words, it's not (in my opinion) OK to go to Church on Sunday and sit in a pew and profess your faith and not have your actions and personal life reflect that on a daily basis.
The bible directs those whose believe to walk it everyday.

Candidates/politicians are people. They sometimes do wonderful things and sometimes to horrible things. They have skeletons in their closet and all have made mistakes and done things they regret. They all have families and all have ideas about how things should be. Most are just regular people and are neither exceptionally good or bad. Most people run for office, especially those who are not in office, because they think they can make things better for the community. Incumbents often begin to feel a sense of entitlement or think they are indispensable and view holding office as a job or income instead of a calling. Not all feel that way but many do across party lines. People tend to make excuses for the conduct of candidates they like and denigrate those they disagree with. These are just facts and the way things are.

It hasn't changed C. Jones one iota! You don't know that persons heart. You want to debate or comment on a persons position or performance on issues...especially an elected politician, fair game.
But to constantly bash someone personally I believe is wrong.

I didn't think you were.
If there was at least an attempt to correct the failures being discussed, the chances are high the conversation wouldn't have existed in the first place. The more flagrant the behavior becomes the more negative the attention is.
