BCC Meeting Tuesday

Walton County Dec.12 Board of County Commissioner meeting promises to draw hundreds for controversial agenda items.

The agenda for Tuesday, Dec.12
Includes a 3:00 pm public hearing on far reaching changes to the Beach Activities Ordinance. The proposed changes greatly expand vending areas on the beaches, allow propane grills, prohibit charcoal grills, reiterate tent sizes, and require storage boxes for vendor chairs and umbrellas. Changes include no longer requiring upland property owner authorization for vending in front of their property.
Two of the commissioners have relatives that are vendors which requires then to recuse themselves from voting on the matter. They must also file conflict of interest disclosure forms.

At or after 4:00 pm , the long agenda includes an organized group coming forward to request the BCC vote to remove the confederate flag from the DeFuniak Springs courthouse lawn. Word is that some of the commissioners want this put on a referendum for the voters to decide. The group requesting the change want an up or down vote by the commission. Cecilia Jones ducked this same vote in 2015 so it will be interesting to see if her handlers allow her to show up for this very controversial vote.

The Cypress Dunes PUD is on the Land Use portion of the agenda later in the evening. The opponents of the project located on west 30A
are calling for a continuance based on a problem with the review process. The word from the Planning Department was that it would be heard Jan.9th but it appears on this agenda instead.

Commissioner Nipper will introduce additions to the Employee Policy Manual calling for the establishment of a Grievance Procedure. Employees who filed complaints against past Chair Jones were recently denied legal representation at interviews with the county’s outside legal counsel. Employees who wanted their legal counsel to attend and represent them at these interviews were denied that right.

If citizens cannot attend the BCC meeting at the south Walton annex, they can view a live video by going to waltoncountyflahomepage and clicking on BCC Videos, December 12, Video in Progress. If the video does not play, hit Refresh.

Walton Politics will issue a report on the outcome of the meeting.

Which two commissioners will be recusing themselves? I read on here that Mrs. Jones son has a beach chair business but I'm not aware of any others. Thanks.

Why not attend the meeting and see? Or sit here and call everyone you don't agree with a liar with no facts to back it.

Attended the meeting last night and only saw 1 Commissioner recuse themselves on the vending issue. Fair to saying you're lying yet?

Its fair to say you are clueless!!

Tony Anderson's son is a golf cart VENDOR!

Cecilia Jones son is a beach chair VENDOR!

BTW, the original post (the one at the very top of this page) was written by "Walton Politics" and copy pasted here with the link! I do not write for the Walton Politics page so I would NOT be the author of what you're calling a lie anyway!

Fact remains there are 2 Commissioners that have relatives that are vendors!

The meeting was for BEACH VENDING not vending in general and Mr. Anderson didn't need to recuse himself. I guess that makes you the clueless one.

Just to let you know when you copy and paste any lies or incorrect information you will be called out.

The fact remains that the statement "Two of the commissioners have relatives that are vendors which requires then to recuse themselves from voting on the matter" was incorrect so own up to it.

And again, the original post said "relatives who are vendors". That is a true statement!!

In all honesty, I do think BCC members with relatives who are vendors should recuse themselves to avoid the appearance of impropriety or a conflict of interest but that's my personal opinion!

The article I copy/pasted was not a lie.

So, after the above back-and-forth total waste of electrons, does anyone have an update on the BCC meeting?

Results of the BCC meeting of December 12:

The BCC voted 3-2 to put the question of confederate flag removal from courthouse lawn on a referendum ballot during the November 2018 general election. Chapman and Nipper voted not to send it to a ballot.
The wording of the referendum is important but was not discussed.
The flag was mentioned in the motion but not the memorial that stands beside the flag on the courthouse grounds. Against the objection of many who called for the BCC to vote up or down, Jones, Anderson, and Comander said put it on a ballot; we are not going to vote on it tonight. A referendum costs the taxpayers approximately $40,000.

The Beach Activity Ordinance changes will be continued to Monday, January 8 at 10 a.m.
at the south Walton Annex. It appears the upland property owners in front of a public beach will no longer have the authority to prohibit vending. A vote will be taken Jan.8.

Cypress Lake PUD was heard over the objections of opponents who asked for a continuance but were denied. Apparently Anderson’s office told the opponent’s representative it would be continued and when it was not to be continued, Anderson failed to notify the opponents. Interesting that the same engineering firm that has a long time contract for continuing engineering services was the engineer on the Cypress Lake PUD asking the county to whom it is contracted to approve a Land Development project. Conflict?
You decide. Approved 4-1 with Nipper as the nay vote.

A grievance procedure policy that would allow complainants to have legal counsel or other representation at an interview or other proceedings was discussed.
Currently, if an employee files a grievance against a commissioner,
they are prohibited from having counsel in the room. We think that is a violation of a person’s rights.
This will be reviewed again at the December 21 BCC in DeFuniak Springs. Cecilia Jones spoke against making this change instead asking for a overhaul of the policies which as everyone knows would take at least a year. No surprise there. She is the subject of the complaints and she is up for re-election in 2018.

According to the Tourist Development Council , October tourism numbers were down compared to last October.

OMG would you please stop with this!!

2 Commissioners have family that are vendors!!

I never said he HAD to recuse himself. You're making that up. What I think he should do and what he legally has to do are 2 entirely different scenarios!!

I suspect that golf cart vending is not considered a conflict regarding the Beach Activities Ordinance because golf carts are not used/allowed on the beach. Hope that isn't next!:scratching:

I suspect you are probably right. Vendors all have skin in the game when it comes to vending in my opinion. It's also an issue exclusive to SoWal because we don't have vendors up here.

I have noticed that there seems to be a push for parking at beach access points for golf carts which again in MY OPINION would create a conflict. With everything else they are going to allow on the beach it may be just a matter of time before you see them there as well.

Golf cart parking is not necessarily a bad idea as long as it is well defined and enforced. Oops, there's that nasty problem of enforcement again!

@FactorFiction Consider this also...shortly after Tony Anderson was elected he admitted to having a gas grill on the beach which at the time violated the beach ordinances. He wasn't a Commissioner when it happened so, no biggie and I doubt seriously he was fined.

Now, they can have grills on the beach. Pushing Agendas!

Enforcement? :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

I would guess they are doing golf cart parking because 1 CAR parking spot equals 2 GOLF CART parking spots and since SoWal is becoming more and more golf cart friendly why not? Its called forward thinking.

What public safety hazards do they pose? The only go 20 mph right?

Im sure you'll take this the wrong way but what is your problem with vending? These are local people providing jobs for more locals. Also when is the last time you've been on 30A or Scenic Gulf Drive?
