I was told That MediaCom was the internet service provider for 32459 - but I was talking to Cox today and they said they service the area too.

Which do you use?

Thanks
G

I don't think Cox has expanded of all of 32459, yet. I know they were coming out of east end, and are currently in PCB. Cox is the exclusive company in Freeport. Where is the competition? is the question I've been asking for years, and the answer is, "cable and phone companies don't want competition."

The people staying at our cottage said the Internet has been spotty this week. We have Mediacom. Is this typical and is there anything we can do about it (e.g. if we call mediacom, can they fix it?). The nice guests said it's OK because they're here to be at the beach but they thought I should know. Any suggestions? They said the cable is a bit spotty this week, too. Thanks.

I may be mistaken but I do not believe that they cross areas. In other words you get whichever one comes to your house. And my experience of late with Cox is pretty poor. A client had to actually got to Embarq to get phone/internet this week. ugh!

No cable of any sort comes to my neighborhood, and we were lucky to FINALLY get DSL a couple of years ago when Embarq bought Sprint. We've only had one outage that couldn't be fixed by ShallowsFuzz resetting the thingamajig.

Hello Gidget,
I'm in same zip in Pt. Washington and had only MediaCom & Embarq to choose from when I moved here in May. The reviews of Mediacom were not very impressive (use Search function to find more threads about it) so I used Embarq.

Its actually been very good, I run three MacIntosh computers and one PC through my Linksys on it, using the 'most popular choice' they offer, even though they'll try for a bigger upgrade it doesnt seem necessary. I'll look up the name of that option for you. You'll need to bundle a phone line with them too, which I remember as about $29.99. I think my total bill is $80 for both?

No cable out here, just satellite options, I think DirecTV looks like the way I'll end up going (Football necessity) You may have other options in your area.

THX guys! I am going to be in Blue Gulf @ Blue Mtn - Flounder St. I think most over there use MediaCom but I am going to check on Embarq - I hadn't even heard of them. I don't need a phone as we will just use our cell. (I hope Alltel/Verizon works well out there) What speed internet do you have - I was looking at 3.0M - I think that should do it.

Here, out in the boonies in LA, we can't get cable so we have relied on Dish for over 10 yrs. I think we will not even subscribe to cable or satellite once we are in our house, IF we can get the local digital channels. I hope the digitals come in decently in that area - I am sure we'll have to have some sort of ugly antenna. I can watch Comedy Central (Daily Show/Colbert) online and then go with Netflix for movies and TV series I'd like to see and then have the locals - if they come in reliably.

Ha ha - my husband had to actually CUT A PATH with a chainsaw through the trees in order to find a tower so that we might have high speed Internet out here in LA. It has been great- except for a couple of occasions.

Thanks again
G

I had never heard of them before either, I had Comcast back in Georgia, and so far this is much better.

My notes from Embarq internet options were as follows (but check their website to see current fees/service charges or specials High Speed Internet - Local Phone Services | Embarq)

"Preferred" internet @ 1.5 mbps was $24.95/mo
"Premium" internet @ 3.0 mbps was $29.95
"Premier" internet @ 5.0 mbps was $39.95

I use the middle one "premium" with heavy multiple computer usage and big programs, and its very fast.

You may want to call and talk to a service rep to see what your options are, for me, I needed to have the phone line activated.

You need to remember that service will vary depending on the grid. Picture a grid being an overlay on the map, covering a particular area, such as a neighborhood or beach community. In your grid, Embarq may have plenty of pipe, from a lack of users, so speed will be faster. In contrast, if your grid is mostly Embarq users for internet, it will be slower speed.

We've had Cox for internet since 2001, and have actually been very happy with it- only one outage over all that time, and they actually stayed on the air and in service for my neighborhood through all of Hurricane Ivan.

Embarq is the way to go for internet. We have mediacom for cable (no choice except dish) and they are well, flaky at best. Mediacom calls and wants us to switch to the cable / phone / internet service package, which would save money but I always tell them no way, I can't afford to have my internet down as much as the cable is. Everytime we have to call because the cable goes out I remind them that this is why I do not have internet service with them. My mother-in-law switched to save some dough and paid the price.. no cable, no phone, no internet when it crashes. After Hurricane Dennis my phone and internet were up within days and mediacom took weeks.
