I am looking for a good radar detector. I googled and didn't have much luck. I looked on Consumer Reports online with no success. I pay for that subscription -- it is pretty useless.

It would really be nice to have a combo GPS navigation with radar detector, but they don't get good reviews in the navigation aspect.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks, y'all! My Christmas present! I hate driving a BMW that is a total joy to drive to the beach at speed limit +10 when the roads are perfectly clear of traffic.

Hubby just bought a $50 one at Wal-Mart. Worthless.

Never had one. Get speeding tickets all the time.

Might git a Citizens Band Radio, though.

Don't bother with one that has laser detection. In order to register, it has to get hit which means that it will be really good at telling you when you're going to get pulled over rather than warning you against getting pulled over. No latent light from lasers. It's either on you or not.

Set your cruise 5 over and save yourself lots of $$. Had a very nice officer let me go, after being nailed at 20 over, at the Hathaway bridge 2 yrs ago, Oct. And, with my radar device on. Not worth it.

I remember reading an article on detectors which informed users of radar detectors how to use them effectively. Drive a bit behind, but within eye sight of another speeder. When the cop hits the radar after seeing a speeder, the one hit hits will be the driver in front and your detector will alert, so that you can slow. They noted that most cops don't keep the radar on, because that would alert the radar detector drivers.

I just try to stay within the speed limit, or if on the open, clear highway, I might drive 8 over. I think I got two speeding tickets in my life, both 20 over (45 in a 25 which was rather ridiculous), but those were before I was 19 years old.

I have a digital cruise control that I really like. I normally set it to 9 mph over the speed limit. But if a group of vehicles passes me and the vehicles behind me appear to be going a similar speed, "Mercy sakes alive, looks like we got us a convoy! "

Cause we gotta little ol' convoy, rockin' through the night
Yeah we gotta little ol' convoy, ain't she a beautiful sight?
Come on an' join our convoy, ain't nothin' gonna git in our way
We're gonna roll this truckin' convoy, cross the USA
Convoy... Convoy...

If the convoy fails, I keep my eyes watching the front and back. The cruise control has a five-mph-incremental change lever, so if I see a smokey, I can quickly pop down to speed limit without looking like I'm slamming on the brakes.

There are also places where I've never seen a smokey, so I take advantage of that. ;-) I love driving my car on back roads because I can accelerate from 55 to 90 to pass slow cars in a flash.

Of course, stopping for the dog's potty break negates much of the time that I've gained from speeding.:bang: but I  her.

I have the K40 radar detection/laser diffusion system installed in my Range Rover. The system is the best on the market and is built into the front and rear bumpers as well as the front grill. There is no dash mounted detector to attract thieves and no hastle whatsoever. No one can tell you have this system installed.

Singinchickin is correct that laser detectors are useless. You need a diffuser to knock out the laser signal when it hits your vehicle. The K40 system has saved me more times than I can remember. In fact, Calibre (the maker) guarantees to pay any and all tickets you receive within one year of installation. Can't beat that.

Happy speeding!

Now this sounds interesting! I never invested in a radar detector because was always told it guaranteed you a ticket if pulled and officer saw it on dash, etc.

Speed Trap: Abbeville, AL - and, they are crooks, to boot! Wrote me a ticket for 91 when I was going 71. I guess they didn't think I would have my speedometer calibrated and drive back to their podunk town to contest. Prosecutor said, "Well, 71 is still speeding." Yep, but only 6 miles over, which means I don't lose my license and insurance you Little Big Bully! Hmph!
