Hey Everyone,

As many of you know, it was my plan to add to the music opportunites at SoWal H.S. by adding a steel pan band. I want to be able to draw more kids in from the general population of the school as well as let our band kids expand their opportunities too.

Well, I'm proud to say that those plans are coming together and we have received our pans!

My reason for posting here is to let intersted peeps know that I would like to start a community pan group as well. I'm thinking that my schedule would allow me to have it meet on Tuesday nights from say 6pm-8pm or so. When we find out if and how many peeps are interested we can make firm plans.

So, if you are interested and would like to be involved, just post here. That will be the best way for me to get a head count.

Remember, it does not matter if you know how to read music or have ever played an instrument before, we're here to have fun and learn.

I will make annoucements on here about a possible upcoming schedule.

Thanks,

Yep! They were made by Alan Coyle over in Pensacola. He is one of the best in the country and makes them for tons of colleges, schools and professional performers.

We have 5 Tenors, 4 Double 2nds, 3 Guitar or Triple Cellos and 1 set of Bass Pans. So, we can have 13 pans playing at one time and then you add to that a Trap Set and auxillary percussion. We're trying to have about 20 play in each ensemble and I'm not opposed to having more than one group.

Check out www.coyledrums.com

Also, Mat Britain from Vanderbilt University will be coming down soon to give us a good start in the basics of playing the pans.

Hey Everyone,

Several of you have contacted me about the Steep Pan Band and I'm excited. I would like to know how many of you would be interested in starting a class next Tuesday, January 26th. Here are the particulars:

Where: South Walton High School Band Room (located behind the school by the tennis courts)

When: 6pm-7:30pm We can adust the time once we get things rolling a bit.

What to bring: A great attitude! We have everything else.

We would love to have peeps of any experience level. You do not have to know how read music (yet) to have fun!

Hope to see you there!

Great Idea. We need to hear more steel drum or pan music around SoWal. Be sure to check out the Florida Chautauqua Jan. 28-31. Steel Drum Performer John Bussert and friends will be performing at an opening night Caribbean Cruise Party as well as teas and demonstrations. The Friday 7 p.m. performance will feature FAMU's famed Junkanoo group and the Bahamian Rhythm Rushers. Students could see how it is done, man!!!

We will have our regular Thursday night class tonight at the South Walton H.S. Band Room (in the back of the school) from 6-7:30pm. We usually go our for dinner afterwards too!

I want to invite everyone out to spend the day with us this coming Saturday, Feb. 20th. As I stated in an earlier post, we are lucky to have Mat Britain from Vanderbilt University coming to work with us.
